Phoenix Start Conference Play Strong with Sweep Over Wildcats

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Volleyball opened their conference account by sweeping Bethel in three straight sets.

The Phoenix comfortably got the win against the Wildcats today. With Lila Cade leading the way in kills with nine, followed by Alei Roper with six. Emma Carter had an impressive 4 aces, as did Morgan Snead. The Phoenix were hot from the service line with a total of 18 aces today. Carlee Rogers and Morgan Snead were big on the defensive end with 15 and 12 kills respectively. Cumberland finished with a .216 hitting percentage and held the Wildcats to a .09 hitting percentage.

The first Phoenix started the game strongly, with four kills, forcing a Bethel timeout at 8-3. The Phoenix carried on building momentum, when they went on a four point run of three kills and one service ace to force a second wildcats timeout at 16-6. Bethel regrouped and tried to battle back, winning three points after the timeout, however, the Phoenix answered with a number of kills and the gap was simply too big, as a Carlee Rogers kill ended the set 25-12

The second set started much more evenly with both teams rallying well, but again it was the Phoenix who started to break away as three Bethel errors put them up 7-4. The Phoenix went on a four point run which included a Lila Cade kill and a service ace from Morgan Snead which widened the gap as Cumberland made it 14-8.

Bethel fought back with a four point run to narrow the gap to 15-12. However, back to back kills from Lila Cade got the Phoenix back on track. Two more kills by Hazel Konkel and Hailey Jones put the Phoenix up 22-14 as Bethel took a timeout. Emma Carter got the final point on a service ace as the Phoenix took the second set 25-15.

The Phoenix took an early 7-2 lead in the third set, including back to back service aces from Delaney Jones, forcing a Wildcats time out. Bethel tried to claw some points back and did so, but with the points gained in the opening stages the Phoenix remained up 13-8 as they took a timeout. Both teams hit a number of kills, with the Phoenix keeping their lead at 19-14. The Phoenix comfortably saw out the third set and took the game 25-12, 25-15, 25-17.

The Phoenix are back in action on Saturday, September 20th as they travel to Portsmouth, Ohio to face Rio Grande and Shawnee State.
