Cumberland’s Boyd, Johnson Earn Mid-South Conference Player of the Week Honors

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland football earned two of the Mid-South Conference weekly awards, as senior defensive back Tyreke Boyd was named the Special Teams Player of the Week and junior defensive back Cannon Johnson was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Boyd (Lafayette, La.) delivered one of the biggest turning points in Cumberland's 21-17 road victory at RV Pikeville on Saturday. Early in the second half, Boyd broke through and blocked a punt, which the Phoenix returned for a touchdown to spark a momentum swing in the comeback win.

This is Boyd's first Mid-South Conference Weekly honor of the season and of his career.

Johnson (Maryville, Tenn.) anchored the Phoenix defense, leading the team with nine total tackles, including seven solo stops. The junior also made one of the biggest plays of the game, scooping up a loose ball and scoring his second touchdown of the season. He helped the defense hold the NAIA's leading passing offense to 150 yards less than their average.

This is Johnson's second Mid-South Conference weekly honor of the season earning the award in week two against Reinhardt.

The Phoenix (3-1) will take on their final non-conference game of the season on the road this Saturday at Florida Memorial.
