Phoenix Take Down Bees in Savannah as Gelabert Scores Brace

SAVANNAH, Ga. - - The Cumberland men's soccer team hit the road to take on the Savannah College of Art and Design, looking to get back on track after dropping their conference opener.

With the game starting off slow, the Bees had the first shot of the game in the fifth minute of action, while the Phoenix put the first shot on target in the 25th minute of the game. After more than 35 minutes of play in the first half the two sides combined for just six total shots as Cumberland claimed the lone two shots on goal.

Layering pressure, the Phoenix were finally able to put a goal up on the board before halftime came. Taking his defender on one-on-one, Miquel Gelabert was dispossessed and won the ball right back before taking a left footed shot and burying it in the top left corner to give CU the lead.

Coming out of the break it was all Phoenix as they pressed the Bees with confidence and the home side struggled to break their way past the Cumberland front line. Just under ten minutes out of the break Gelabert doubled the Cumberland lead while securing his brace, coming from a Luis Cerejo pass.

After that goal to open up the half both teams settled in and traded shots back and forth with nothing threatening the goal. SCAD looked for their chance to pull back into the game and in the 83rd minute were finally rewarded with a goal of their own to make it 2-1 with less than ten minutes to play.

Despite that late goal, Gelabert's brace was enough to keep the Phoenix in the win column and move to 7-1-2 on the season. Cumberland will be back at home on Saturday as they will host UHSP for Senior Day at noon.
