Cumberland Football falls on the road to Florida Memorial

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.--Cumberland battled, but could not overcome Florida Memorial to drop their second contest of the season, 24-19.

The Phoenix got a stop to start the game before riding Cornejo down the field. He punched in his fourth touchdown of the season from three yards out to cap a 10-play 65 yard drive for a 7-0 lead.

Florida Memorial answered in just two plays as David Buggs tossed a 72-yard bomb to Jalen Holly to get the score right back.

Cumberland went back to work on the ground game before Abston twirled his first pass that was picked off by Zion Johnson and returned to the Florida Memorial six-yard line. The Lions used the next play to give the ball to Simms for a six-yard score and the lead 14-7 after the first quarter.

Jarrius Rogers gave the Phoenix great field position with a 55-yard kick off return. Cumberland inched closer before settling for a 31-yard field goal from Jack Kantner to cut into the lead 14-10.

The Lions would score one more time with a 35-yard field goal. The Lions had a chance to tack on more points before the break, but a Phoenix stop deep down field kept them off the board going into half down 17-10.

At the half, a lightning delay hit the Miami Gardens are halting the game for two hours before the teams we're able to get back on the field.

The third quarter went by fast once we restarted with no score on either side. The Phoenix we're pinned deep before working the ball out to midfield and pinning Florida Memorial back inside the 10. The defense got a stop and took over around midfield before driving to the goalline. CU had three plays inside the five-yard line, but lost yards settling for another Kantner field goal to chip into the lead, 17-13.

Florida Memorial answered with a big drive going 79-yards in five plays capped off with Simms second touchdown rush of the game to extend their lead to 24-13 with 11:23 left in the game.

Following the touchdown, Jake Parker orchestrated a big drive down the field to lead the Phoenix back into the endzone. Parker, under center, powered in a one-yard sneak to cut the game to one-score. Cumberland went for two, but did not convert to keep the score at 24-19 with 7:13 left to play.

Following the Phoenix touchdown, CU defense had a huge three and out to take back over at their own at 45-yard line. Parker weaved his way down field until a long third down play in Florida Memorial territory. Parker threw it up and had it intercepted to give Florida Memorial back the ball as the Lions ran the clock out.

The Phoenix will have a bye week next to regroup before getting back into play the following week on the road at Bethel.
