The Phoenix Remain Unbeaten. Take Down Bryan College 5-0

LEBANON, Tenn. – The Phoenix rout the Bryan College Lions 5-0 with five different Phoenix players scoring goals.

After a disappointing finish against Tennessee Southern, the Phoenix wanted to start the game strong, and they were able to with a scoring chance by Philip Schmidtke in the second minute of the game.

The Phoenix offense would keep the pressure up on the Lions with six more shots before Alejandro Vega would open the scoring off of a header. Luis Cerejo would be credited for the assist with his fantastic pass from the near corner flag.

The midfield was dominated by the Phoenix with possessions for the Lions disappearing quickly as Phoenix defenders would get in front of the passing lanes.

The second goal would be scored in the 25th minute as Schmidtke would win the ball in the penalty box and send a screamer past the goalie to double the lead. The Mid-South Conference leader in goals scored would add to his total, bringing it to seven goals on the season.

Then twelve seconds later, Harold Perea would steal the pass and find Cerejo on a through ball and get the score to 3-0.

The fourth goal would come from another fantastic through ball by Perea, and he would find Pau Ortega running down the field, and Ortega would take a shot just outside of the penalty box and get it past the keeper to make it 4-0.

The final goal of the half came two minutes later, as after some substitutions on both sides, Christian Chase would find Zack Anderson in front of the net and Anderson would bury it to make it 5-0 in the 35th minute. The score would hold for the last ten minutes of the half.

Starting the second half, Cumberland would make a rare change at goalkeeper, with sophomore George Irons coming in for Eric Zalaya after a clean first half.

The second half would be played similar to how the end of the first half went, with the Phoenix controlling the possession, but without putting the ball in the net. The Phoenix were content to just keep possession and run out the clock.

The Phoenix would have a couple of good opportunities late with some set plays, but the goalkeeping of the Lions kept them from reaching the back of the net.

There would be no more goals scored in the second half and the Phoenix would take down the Lions 5-0

In total, the Phoenix would take 28 shots, with 15 shots challenging the goalkeeper, meanwhile Bryan would have 4 shots, and only 1 shot on goal.

Cumberland will continue their home stand against Oakland City University on Friday, September 12th at 3:00 PM.
