WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- Nwoye's Career Night Spoiled as the Patriots' Three Point Shooting Overpowers the Phoenix.
The Phoenix shot 47.5% from the field, 20% from the three point line, and 64% from the free throw line. The only major stat the Phoenix were able to lead over the Patriots is the points in the paint (42-36).
The Phoenix shot 42.1% from the field, 34.9% from the three point line, and 73.7 from the free throw line. The Patriots shot 17 more total shots (made four more) and 28 more three point attempts (made 12 more). The Cumberlands were able to dominate the boards, with 11 more rebounds (45-34) and nine more offensive rebounds (16-7).
For the Phoenix,
Michael Nwoye led the way with a career high 31 points, to go along with 12 rebounds, three blocks, and two steals.
Triston Conger had another solid effort, scoring 16 points, six rebounds, and two assists.
To begin the game, the Phoenix were able to control the physicality of the Cumberlands and were able to stay tied 10-10 as they headed into the first media timeout.
Heading into the halfway point of the first half, the three point shooting has been a major problem for both teams, as the Phoenix and Patriots are a combined 3-16 from three before the second media timeout as the Cumberlands only hold a two point lead over Cumberland.
The big issue that the Phoenix are facing is containing the offensive glass, as the Patriots have ten offensive rebounds before the eight minute mark of the first half.
After a quick burst that saw the Cumberlands lead go up to seven, Cumberland were able to get the lead down to one possession, but the Patriots grew the lead to six before the final media timeout before halftime.
Heading into halftime, the Patriots' three point shooting really started to show up as they went 7-13 from three in the second ten minutes of the first half, including making their last four threes.
That three point shooting ballooned the lead up to 15 as the Patriots went into the locker rooms up 54-39. Nwoye led the Phoenix in that first half with 18 points, six rebounds, three blocks, and one steal.
Heading into the second half, a quick five point burst put the Cumberlands up by 20, but the Phoenix were able to chip into this lead and get it to 14 before the first media timeout.
The Phoenix were able to cut the lead to 10, but were not able to cut the lead any further after multiple good opportunities before the second media timeout.
But coming out of the media timeout, the Patriots pushed the lead out to 21 points and put the game away.
Heading into the final media timeout, the Phoenix were able to cut the lead to 16, with Nwoye adding to his career night, but the three point shooting of the Cumberlands is just too much as they have taken over 40 three point attempts.
To finish out the game, the Phoenix would cut the lead down to 14, but the Patriots three point shooting would extend the lead to 18 as the Phoenix would fall to the Patriots 75-93.
The Phoenix fall to 8-9, and 0-2 in conference play as they head over to Georgetown to face the Tigers on Saturday, January 17th at 2 PM.
