Patriots Pull Away from Phoenix with Second Half Surge

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - - The Cumberland women's basketball team dropped a 67-59 decision on the road to No. 14 ranked University of the Cumberlands.

Ty Buckley led all scorers with 22 points while adding seven rebounds. Emaleigh Tarpley recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, along with five assists. Bushman finished with eight points, while Julia Varpness pulled down nine rebounds to help anchor the interior.

The Phoenix came out firing from three and set the tone early, forcing the Patriots into tough baskets down low, taking a 21-19 lead after one. Ty Buckley led the charge early, scoring nine points in the first ten minutes, while Emaleigh Tarpley and Braley Bushman both made a shot from the field and from the charity stripe after the first frame.

The Cumberlands responded in the second quarter, flipping the momentum with their defense limiting the Phoenix to just eight points in the second. The Patriots used that defensive effort and their own trio of three pointers to take a 36-29 lead into halftime.

The Phoenix battled back in the third quarter, matching Cumberlands point-for-point in a 16-16 period. Sydney Schwallie knocked down a long range shot two minutes into the third and Cumberland continued to attack the paint and draw fouls to stay within striking distance, but despite that effort the Patriots maintained a 52-45 edge heading into the final quarter.

Cumberland continued to fight in the fourth, cutting the deficit to six on multiple occasions, including a late jumper from Buckley with two minutes left. However, Cumberlands closed the game at the free-throw line and limited clean looks down the stretch to secure their 67-59 win.

Cumberland returns to action looking to bounce back as they will stay in Kentucky and take on Georgetown College this Saturday.
