Phoenix Football Hit Road to Square Off Against Andrew College

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland University football returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Cuthbert, Georgia, to face Andrew College at 2 p.m. CT. The Phoenix enter the matchup at 3-2 overall and 0-1 in Mid-South Conference play after suffering a narrow 21-19 loss to No. 24 Georgetown last Saturday at Nokes-Lasater Field.

Cumberland opened the season with three consecutive victories over Ave Maria, Pikeville and Florida Memorial before falling to Georgetown in its conference opener. Despite the loss, the Phoenix controlled much of the game statistically, finishing with 359 yards of total offense and 21 first downs while limiting the Tigers to 167 total yards.

The Phoenix enter Sunday averaging 29.2 points and 335.6 yards of total offense per game. Cumberland has been particularly effective on the ground, averaging 212.4 rushing yards per contest with 12 rushing touchdowns through five games.

Jordan Cason leads the rushing attack with 330 yards on 63 carries, while Jake Parker has added 278 yards and two touchdowns. Jaylen Abston has contributed 269 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Parker has also completed 54 of 93 passes for 616 yards and four touchdowns, accounting for 894 yards of total offense this season.

Cumberland's rushing attack was on display against Georgetown, as Cason recorded 105 yards on 21 carries. Parker finished with 162 passing yards and a touchdown while adding 52 rushing yards and a rushing score. Jordan Parker led the receiving corps with three catches for 63 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown reception.

Defensively, Cumberland has allowed just 18.6 points and 253.4 yards per game through its first five contests. The Phoenix have recorded seven interceptions and have held opponents to 96.4 rushing yards per game. Against Georgetown, Cumberland limited the Tigers to 53 rushing yards and 114 passing yards, keeping the game within a field goal until the final whistle.

Andrew College enters the matchup at 0-6 after a 23-20 loss to Clayton State last Saturday. The Panthers have faced a challenging schedule to open the season, with their most recent contest marking their closest finish since a 23-13 loss to Tennessee Valley Community College.

Through six games, Andrew is averaging approximately 14.2 points and 191.0 yards of total offense per contest. The Panthers have averaged 63.0 rushing yards and 128.0 passing yards per game while allowing approximately 38.5 points per contest.

Andrew has shown signs of improvement offensively in its last two games, particularly with its rushing attack. Against Thomas, the Panthers rushed for 134 yards and four touchdowns, with Kaleb George leading the way with 91 yards and two scores on 16 carries. Elijah Coleman added 25 rushing yards and a touchdown.

The Panthers continued that ground production against Clayton State, finishing with 132 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 48 attempts. Ja' Quan led Andrew with 67 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, while Jyrell Reese added 37 yards on a single attempt.

Andrew has also shown the ability to produce through the air. Quarterback Jordan Washington threw for 192 yards and a touchdown against Thomas, while the Panthers recorded 157 passing yards and two touchdowns against Tennessee Valley Community College earlier in the season. However, Andrew was held to just 42 total yards in its season-opening matchup against Georgetown.

Last Saturday's game against Clayton State saw Andrew take a 19-15 lead in the third quarter after scoring three rushing touchdowns. Clayton State responded with a late fourth-quarter touchdown to secure the 23-20 victory. Andrew finished with 203 total yards and controlled possession for more than 34 minutes, demonstrating its ability to sustain drives despite the loss.

Sunday's contest presents Cumberland with an opportunity to rebound from its conference-opening defeat and earn its first league victory of the season. The Phoenix will look to establish their rushing attack early while continuing to rely on a defense that has consistently limited opposing offenses. For Andrew, maintaining its recent progress on the ground will be important as the Panthers look to secure their first win of the season.

Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT Sunday at Early County High School in Blakely, Georgia.
