Top Defense meets High-Powered Offense as No. 25 Phoenix visit No. 13 Campbellsville

LEBANON, Tenn.--One of the NAIA's top defenses will face one of its most productive offenses Saturday as No. 25 Cumberland travels to No. 13 Campbellsville for a Mid-South Conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CT in Campbellsville, Ky.

The Phoenix enter the contest at 4-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play after a 62-0 victory at Andrew. Cumberland returned to the Top 25 in this week's NAIA Coaches' Poll and will look to secure its first conference victory against a Campbellsville team sitting at 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the MSC.

Saturday's matchup features a Cumberland defense that leads the NAIA in passing yards allowed against a Campbellsville offense ranked seventh nationally in total offense. The Phoenix surrender just 130.5 yards through the air and rank third in total defense at 217.8 yards per game. The Tigers average 487.0 yards of offense and 40.5 points per game, placing 10th nationally in scoring.

Cumberland has limited opponents to 15.5 points per game and 87.3 rushing yards per contest. Opposing quarterbacks have completed just 45 percent of their passes against the Phoenix, who have collected eight interceptions and scored three defensive touchdowns.

Knox Watson leads Cumberland with 36 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss, while Eli Denton has added 30 tackles, an interception and three pass breakups. Josh Jones has totaled 28 tackles, including five behind the line of scrimmage, and Lance Mathews leads the team with two sacks.

In the secondary, Cannon Johnson and Daniel Doegan have two interceptions apiece. Tyriq Edwards has contributed six pass breakups and an interception return for a touchdown, while Jacobi Johnson also has returned an interception for a score.

That group will be challenged by Campbellsville quarterback Justyce Law, who has thrown for 1,351 yards and 11 touchdowns while completing 60.4 percent of his passes. Law also presents a threat on the ground with 311 rushing yards and a team-leading eight rushing touchdowns.

Troy Oliver leads the Tigers' receiving corps with 21 catches for 390 yards and two touchdowns. Ashton Auker has added 19 receptions for 281 yards, while Easton Barlow has 245 yards and two scores. Campbellsville has spread its 17 touchdown passes among 13 receivers, giving the Tigers several options in the passing game.

Archelaus Smith leads Campbellsville's rushing attack with 346 yards, averaging 7.4 yards per carry. Dionte Jones has added 226 yards and two touchdowns on just 19 attempts, helping the Tigers average 211.2 rushing yards per game.

Cumberland will counter with a ground game averaging 230.0 yards per contest, good for 13th in the NAIA. The Phoenix have rushed for 19 touchdowns while averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

Jordan Cason leads Cumberland with 362 rushing yards and three touchdowns in five games. Quarterback Jake Parker has added 286 yards and two scores on the ground, while Jaylen Abston has rushed for 283 yards and four touchdowns. Rashod Daniel leads the Phoenix with five rushing touchdowns and has gained 224 yards at 6.1 yards per attempt.

Parker has thrown for 714 yards and five touchdowns with just two interceptions. Jordan Parker leads Cumberland with 201 receiving yards, while Kaiden Hatchett has a team-high 18 receptions for 178 yards. Both have caught two touchdown passes.

The Phoenix will face a Campbellsville defense allowing 263.3 yards and 15.7 points per game. The Tigers have held opponents to 98.5 rushing yards per contest and intercepted 10 passes. Tyler Ballard leads the unit with 33 tackles and six tackles for loss, while Jerrod Johnson has recorded 26 tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Ball security and sustained possessions could play a significant role Saturday. Cumberland has committed just five turnovers through six games and owns a plus-six turnover margin. The Phoenix have converted 45 percent of their third-down opportunities and average 34:42 in possession time, giving them an opportunity to control the pace against Campbellsville's offense.

The Tigers enter Saturday following a 33-26 road victory over Cumberlands. Their lone loss came at Lindsey Wilson, 30-21, in their conference opener. Cumberland, unbeaten in two road games this season, will look to carry that success into a matchup with implications for both the MSC standings and playoff implications.

Saturday will mark the 37th meeting between Cumberland and Campbellsville, with the all-time series tied at 18-18. The Phoenix have won six of the last 10 matchups, including a 35-33 victory in last season's Homecoming thriller in Lebanon. Cumberland scored 23 fourth-quarter points and denied the Tigers' two-point conversion attempt to secure the win. The Phoenix are 7-10 in the series on the road and will seek their first victory at Campbellsville since 2021.

Christian Kaposy and Bob Lea will be on the road with the call on WANT FM 98.9. Pregame will begin 30 minutes before kick-off at noon central time.
