Phoenix Outlast Lindsey Wilson in Five Sets to Sweep Season Series

COLUMBIA, Ky.--Cumberland volleyball held off a Lindsey Wilson comeback Friday night, winning the decisive fifth set to secure a 3-2 victory at Biggers Sports Center to sweep the regular-season series. The Phoenix took the first two sets before closing out the Mid-South Conference win, 25-21, 25-12, 21-25, 19-25, 15-12.

Cumberland improved to 15-13 overall and 5-2 in conference play, finishing with 58 kills and a .180 hitting percentage. The Phoenix totaled 56 assists, seven service aces, 82 digs and nine blocks while holding Lindsey Wilson to a .080 attack percentage.

Carola Schnidrig led CU with a double-double of 16 kills and 21 digs while adding three service aces. Carlee Rogers recorded a triple-double with 11 kills, 24 assists and 13 digs. Bianca Guceanu contributed nine kills, while Liberty Shadix put down eight without an error on 16 swings for a .500 hitting percentage and led the Phoenix with six blocks, including three solo stops. Hailey Jones added eight kills and three blocks, and Jacey Hubbell finished with six kills and four blocks. Emma Chavers distributed 23 assists with three aces, while AJ Bryant collected 14 digs and Kaleigh Glass added 13.

Lindsey Wilson fell to 14-16 overall and 3-5 in the MSC. The Blue Raiders registered 40 kills against 27 attack errors on 163 attempts, adding 39 assists, six aces, 66 digs and 11 blocks.

Luisina Sandrone Tais paced Lindsey Wilson with 12 kills, while Tully Bew and Gabi Zuquelo each finished with nine. Addison Janes handed out 19 assists, and Kennedy Moone led the defense with 17 digs. Momo Hampton contributed 14 digs and three aces, while Duda Becho recorded five blocks.

Cumberland opened the first set with a 5-1 advantage before Lindsey Wilson pulled even at 5-5. The Phoenix regained control with three straight kills from Shadix, Rogers and Shadix again to move ahead 11-7 and later stretched the margin to 22-16. Lindsey Wilson trimmed the deficit to 23-20, but Jones delivered a kill to bring up set point before a Shadix solo block sealed the 25-21 win. Jones supplied five kills in the opener, while CU totaled four blocks.

The Phoenix carried that momentum into the second set, hitting .371 with 16 kills and just three attack errors. Consecutive Schnidrig aces helped CU establish a 5-1 lead before a seven-point run on Chavers' serve pushed the advantage to 14-3. Rogers supplied three kills during the surge, while Chavers added an ace. Lindsey Wilson cut the margin to 18-11, but Cumberland answered by winning seven of the final eight points. A combined block from Hubbell and Shadix finished the 25-12 victory for a two-set lead.

Lindsey Wilson responded in the third, jumping ahead 5-1 and maintaining the advantage through the middle of the set. Trailing 14-8, Cumberland rattled off four straight points behind a Jones-Hubbell block, a Schnidrig ace and a Guceanu kill to get within two. The Phoenix continued to chip away, eventually tying the score at 21-21 on a Jones kill. The Blue Raiders answered with the final four points, using consecutive blocks before kills from Bew and Sandrone Tais secured the 25-21 decision.

Cumberland built a 10-5 lead in the fourth behind a five-point run that included two Chavers aces and later held a 15-11 advantage. Lindsey Wilson turned the set with eight unanswered points to move ahead 19-15, getting four kills from Sandrone Tais during the stretch. The Blue Raiders maintained the lead from there to force a fifth set with a 25-19 win, limiting CU to three kills and a negative .179 hitting percentage in the set

The Phoenix regrouped in the fifth, after back and forth action and a long discussion flipped a point the way of Cumberland to put the CU lead at 5-3. Cumberland used that to push  a five-point run to build a 9-3 advantage. Lindsey Wilson countered with seven straight points to take a 10-9 advantage, but Cumberland responded with consecutive points to regain the lead. With the score tied at 12-12, Schnidrig put down back-to-back kills before Hubbell and Jones teamed up for the match-clinching block.

Cumberland returns to action Tuesday, October 20, traveling to Nashville to face Fisk at 7 p.m. for their final non-conference match of the regular season.
