No. 25 Cumberland Welcomes No. 24 Georgetown for First Top 25 Matchup Since 2019

LEBANON, Tenn.--No. 25 Cumberland opens Mid-South Conference play with a Top 25 showdown Saturday, hosting No. 24 Georgetown at Nokes-Lasater Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. as the Phoenix celebrate Homecoming and Hall of Fame Weekend.

Selected as one of the NAIA Featured Games of the Week, Saturday's contest marks the first matchup between two ranked teams at Nokes-Lasater Field since 2019, when No. 24 Keiser defeated No. 23 Cumberland, 38-26.

The Phoenix enter the conference opener at 3-1 after sweeping their September schedule with victories over Ave Maria, Pikeville and Florida Memorial. Cumberland outscored those three opponents 121-45, closing the month with a 41-14 victory over Florida Memorial.

Georgetown enters Saturday's conference opener at 2-2 after a 39-14 road victory over Warner in its last outing. The Tigers opened the season with a narrow 27-23 loss at NCAA Division I Butler before defeating Andrew College, 35-5. Georgetown then fell to St. Thomas, 34-18, before bouncing back against Warner. Saturday marks the Tigers' fourth road game in their first five contests. The Tigers were idle last week.

An opportunistic defense has helped fuel Cumberland's three-game winning streak. The Phoenix are allowing 18.0 points and 275.0 yards per game, including just 107.3 yards on the ground. Opposing quarterbacks have completed only 46 percent of their passes against CU, which has intercepted seven passes and recovered three fumbles.

Cumberland is tied for ninth in the NAIA with 32 tackles for loss and ranks second nationally with three defensive touchdowns, all scored in the victory over Pikeville. The Phoenix also rank fourth in turnover margin at plus-five.

Sophomore defensive back Tyriq Edwards is tied for third in the NAIA with six pass breakups. Edwards has added 13 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, an interception returned for a touchdown and a fumble recovery. He joins Cannon Johnson and Knox Watson as the three different Phoenix defenders to earn Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors over the last three weeks.

Watson leads Cumberland with 22 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss. Lance Mathews has contributed 18 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks, while Johnson has recorded 18 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and a team-high two interceptions. Tavarius Pitts has added four tackles for loss, and Jeremy Willoughby shares the team lead with two sacks.

Offensively, Cumberland averages 31.8 points and 329.8 yards per game. The Phoenix rank 17th nationally in rushing offense at 216.3 yards per contest and have scored 11 touchdowns on the ground. CU has also converted 49 percent of its third-down opportunities, ranking 14th in the NAIA.

Jaylen Abston leads the rushing attack with 243 yards and four touchdowns on 56 carries. Jordan Cason has totaled 225 yards and three scores in three games, averaging 5.4 yards per carry, while Rashod Daniel has added 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Jake Parker has completed 41-of-73 passes for 454 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 226 yards and another score. Kaiden Hatchett leads the Phoenix with 13 receptions and two receiving touchdowns, while Jordan Parker has a team-high 128 receiving yards on eight catches.

Georgetown brings an offense averaging 28.8 points and 329.8 yards per game, with much of its production coming through the air. The Tigers average 228.8 passing yards compared to 101.0 rushing yards per contest and are coming off a 39-14 victory at Warner.

Quarterback Justice Burnam has thrown for 884 yards and six touchdowns, completing 68-of-126 attempts with two interceptions. Clayton Davis is his leading target with 25 catches for 341 yards and two touchdowns. Chandler Godby has added 11 receptions for 166 yards and a score, while Trace Jallick has nine catches for 131 yards and one touchdown.

Darius Neal leads Georgetown's ground game with 173 yards and a touchdown. Guy Bailey has contributed 137 yards and a score, while Trevor DeLacey has rushed for two touchdowns.

The Tigers are allowing 20.0 points and 286.8 yards per game, including 105.5 rushing yards. Cornelius Kemp leads the defense with 25 tackles, while TJ Buckman and Darion Neal have recorded 21 apiece. Devin Redmond has registered three tackles for loss and two sacks.

Georgetown also features the NAIA's leader in field goals made in Braden Widener. Widener has connected on 8-of-9 attempts with a long of 45 yards and leads the Tigers with 34 points.
Discipline figures to be another factor Saturday. Cumberland is the third-least penalized team in the NAIA, while Georgetown ranks seventh.

The Tigers lead the all-time series 21-5 and have won the last 10 meetings, including a 34-13 victory in Georgetown last season. Cumberland's most recent victory in the series came at home in 2015, when the Phoenix earned a 33-26 win. The teams' last meeting in Lebanon was a 14-9 Georgetown victory in 2024.

Saturday gives Cumberland an opportunity to extend its winning streak, end Georgetown's run in the series and open conference play with a victory in front of its Homecoming crowd.
