No. 1 Phoenix Remain Unbeaten with Scoreless Draw Against No. 18 Lindsey Wilson

LEBANON, Tenn.--Playing with its new No. 1 ranking for the first time, Cumberland remained unbeaten with a 0-0 draw against No. 18 Lindsey Wilson in Mid-South Conference action Friday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium.

The Phoenix moved to 9-0-3 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play, while Lindsey Wilson finished the afternoon at 5-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the MSC. The Phoenix pick up a point in the standings to move their lead to 10 points. Lindsey Wilson is in second with seven points.

Cumberland held a 15-5 advantage in shots, including an 11-3 edge in the second half, but could not find the breakthrough. Wesley Mendoza came closest to putting the Phoenix ahead, striking the crossbar in the 68th minute.

Pau Gelabert recorded three saves to secure the shutout for Cumberland, including two stops in the final 13 minutes. Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Zahir Garcia made two saves to keep the Phoenix off the scoreboard.

Mendoza led Cumberland with five shots, while Luis Cerejo and Adrian Jogerst each registered three attempts and one shot on goal.

Both defenses limited opportunities in the opening half. Mendoza had an attempt blocked in the 13th minute before Gelabert stopped Juliano Manfro in the 17th minute for his lone save of the period. Nicolas Sanchez, Jogerst, and Cerejo each sent shots off target as Cumberland entered halftime with a 4-2 advantage in attempts.

The Phoenix increased the pressure immediately after the break. Jogerst tested Garcia just over a minute into the second half, and David Barbakadze followed with a shot wide left. Mark Donaldson had an attempt blocked before Cerejo forced Garcia into another save in the 57th minute.

Cumberland continued to generate chances through the middle of the half. Jogerst, Rex Pearce and Mendoza each missed wide before Mendoza hit the crossbar in the 67th minute. Mendoza added another attempt wide right in the 72nd minute as the match remained scoreless.

Lindsey Wilson threatened late, but Gelabert kept the Blue Raiders out of the net. He denied Denilson Macon in the 78th minute and stopped a header from Milan Diao in the 87th minute.

Following the save, Mendoza found himself behind the back line, but sent Cumberland's final attempt high, leaving the ranked conference matchup level at the final whistle.

Cumberland will continue Mid-South Conference play next Thursday, October 8th, as they go on the road to take on the Cumberlands. The Patriots currently sit in third place with six points in conference play.
