WINONA LAKE, Ind. - - Cumberland women's basketball put together a strong first-half performance against No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan, taking a halftime lead against the nationally ranked Wildcats before ultimately falling 72-60.
The Phoenix defense helped set the tone early, forcing turnovers and limiting the Wildcats to just eight points in the first 10 minutes. Cara Lee Gilbert knocked down an early three-pointer and Emaleigh Tarpley added a transition layup off a steal to help Cumberland build a 10-3 advantage. Dayonna Perryman added a late layup as the Phoenix carried a 12-8 lead into the second quarter.
Gilbert continued to provide the offensive spark in the second, connecting from beyond the arc to extend Cumberland's advantage to 15-10. Indiana Wesleyan responded with a run of its own, eventually taking a 19-15 lead midway through the quarter.
However, the Phoenix continued to answer. Julia Varpness helped get Cumberland back on the board before Gilbert took over offensively. She converted a driving layup before knocking down four consecutive free throws to bring the Phoenix level at 23-23 with just over two minutes remaining in the half.
Taylor Dolente then stepped to the free-throw line and converted both attempts to put Cumberland back in front. Perryman added one more layup in the closing minute, sending the Phoenix into the locker room with an impressive 27-23 halftime advantage over the 14th-ranked Wildcats.
Indiana Wesleyan found its rhythm coming out of the break, opening the third quarter with a run to erase Cumberland's lead and move in front. The Wildcats eventually built a 35-29 advantage, but Dolente answered with a three-pointer, and Tarpley added a free throw to keep the Phoenix within striking distance.
Mariah Okorie provided an important spark off the bench, scoring on a pair of baskets in the paint, while Faith Colston added a layup of her own. Despite the effort, Indiana Wesleyan closed the quarter with a 45-37 advantage.
The Wildcats continued to build on their momentum in the fourth, extending the lead to 20 points at one stage. Cumberland refused to go quietly, however, putting together a late offensive push. Dolente knocked down a pair of three-pointers, including one in transition, while Gilbert added two more triples of her own. Colston and Perryman also found the basket late as the Phoenix continued to battle until the final whistle.
Gilbert led all Cumberland scorers with an impressive 26-point performance, knocking down five three-pointers and going 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. Dolente finished with 13 points, including three triples, while Perryman added six points. Colston contributed four points and four steals, helping lead a Cumberland defense that finished with 11 steals.
The Phoenix finished with 60 points, including 23 in the fourth quarter, but Indiana Wesleyan's second-half surge proved to be the difference as the Wildcats secured the 72-60 victory.
Cumberland will have an opportunity to bounce back Saturday afternoon when it takes on Grace College, the tournament host, at 2 p.m.
