Phoenix Serve Up Sweep at Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky.--Carola Schnidrig delivered 10 kills, 13 digs and six service aces as Cumberland swept Georgetown, 25-14, 25-23, 26-24, Friday night at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym in Mid-South Conference volleyball action.

The Phoenix improved to 17-15 overall and 7-3 in conference play, while the Tigers fell to 21-12 and 3-7 in the MSC.

Cumberland totaled 34 kills on a .239 hitting percentage, adding 32 assists, 42 digs and five blocks. The Phoenix made their biggest impact at the service line, collecting 14 aces compared to six for Georgetown.

Schnidrig hit .444 with just two errors on 18 swings, pairing her team-high kill total with a match-high 13 digs for a double-double. Bianca Guceanu matched her with 10 kills while hitting .333. Liberty Shadix and Hailey Jones added four kills and two blocks apiece, while Sydney Andrews finished with three kills.

Carlee Rogers paced the offense with 16 assists and added two aces, while Emma Chavers contributed 10 assists. Kaleigh Glass anchored the back row with 11 digs, and AJ Bryant chipped in two service aces.

Georgetown finished with 32 kills and a .196 hitting percentage, recording 31 assists, 39 digs and five blocks. Reagan Kupper led the Tigers with nine kills, followed by Zion Smith with six and Giara Ferrari with five. Faith Miller dished out 18 assists, while Abby Walker and Paula Rueda each collected eight digs.

The opening set remained close early, with Georgetown taking a 9-8 lead before Cumberland answered with three straight points. After the Tigers pulled even at 11-11, the Phoenix began to separate behind Schnidrig's serving and an efficient closing stretch.

Leading 15-13, Cumberland scored four consecutive points, including two Guceanu kills and a Glass ace, to stretch the advantage to 19-13. Georgetown stopped the run with a kill, but the Phoenix responded with the final six points. Shadix and Schnidrig supplied kills before aces from Andrews, Schnidrig and Lydia Cox helped finish the 25-14 victory.

Cumberland carried that momentum into the second set, building an early 4-1 lead and maintaining the advantage through the middle of the frame. With the Phoenix ahead 12-10, back-to-back solo blocks by Shadix highlighted a six-point run that pushed the margin to 18-10. Schnidrig and Chavers each added an ace during the surge.

Georgetown worked back within two at 20-18, but Cumberland held its lead and reached set point at 24-20 following a Jones kill and a Tiger attack error. Georgetown fought off three set points before Andrews put away a kill from Rogers to secure the 25-23 win.

The Tigers threatened to extend the match in the third set, using a four-point run to take a 12-9 lead and later stretching the margin to 18-14. Cumberland responded by winning six of the next seven points, with Schnidrig supplying three kills and teaming with Jones for a block as the Phoenix moved ahead 20-19.

The teams traded the lead down the stretch before Georgetown earned set point at 24-23. Guceanu answered with a kill to keep Cumberland alive, and Schnidrig followed with another kill to give the Phoenix match point. A Georgetown setting error completed the comeback and sealed the sweep with a 26-24 victory.

Cumberland will return home next Tuesday to take on Campbellsville in a big match with seeding implications in the conference tournament.
