Bryan’s Late Power Surge Sinks Phoenix, 13-7

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland built an early lead. but couldn't hold off a relentless Bryan offense, falling 13-7 in a midweek matchup Tuesday afternoon at Woody Hunt Stadium.

Cumberland (6-4) totaled 10 hits. Dylan LaRue led the way with a 3-for-5 performance and an RBI triple. Gaines Haussin went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while Caleb Royer's first-inning three-run blast accounted for nearly half of the Phoenix's offense. Aiden McDonald finished with a double and two RBI.

Bryan (4-7) finished with 11 hits but drew 14 walks and was hit by five pitches, consistently applying pressure throughout the final six innings. Curcio paced the Lions with a 3-for-4 effort, two home runs and five RBI, while Ramsey and Williams each homered as part of the comeback.

Kyle Niebow got the start for Cumberland, allowing one run over 2.1 innings. Jaron Keyser (0-1) was charged with the loss. Chris Hall (1-0) earned the win in relief for Bryan.

The Phoenix struck first and did so in a big way. Haussin and LaRue helped set the table in the bottom of the first before Wilser Then ripped an RBI single through the left side to open the scoring. Moments later, Royer launched a three-run homer to right field, plating Then and courtesy-runner Wyatt Hurt to cap a four-run inning and give Cumberland a 4-0 advantage.

Bryan chipped away in the third with a bases-loaded walk, but Cumberland answered right back in the home half. Aiden McDonald doubled to right center to drive in two more runs, pushing the Phoenix lead to 6-1 through three innings.

The Lions, however, methodically worked back into the game. Bryan plated two runs in the fifth on a walk and an RBI single before trimming the deficit to 6-4 in the sixth on a solo home run from Denajh Williams.

The turning point came in the seventh. After a solo homer from Will Curcio made it 6-5, Bryan strung together a single and a two-run homer from Caleb Ramsey to seize an 8-6 lead. Cumberland responded in the bottom half when LaRue tripled to left center to score Haussin and pull within one, 8-7, but Bryan ended up stranding runners on the corners with just one out.

Bryan added three runs in the eighth, highlighted by Curcio's second homer of the day, a two-run shot to left before tacking on two more in the ninth via a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly to stretch the final margin to 13-7.

Cumberland will look to bounce back as they continue their homestand this Saturday and Sunday as Aquinas comes to town.
