Phoenix Second Half Stutter Sees No. 1 Lions Stay Perfect in MSC

HENDERSON, Tenn. - - Cumberland battled to a razor thin first half margin but couldn't keep pace with the red-hot Lions, falling 85-61 in Henderson.

Freed started off hot with a pair of threes, though that hot start fell flat shortly after as both teams seemed to focus their energy onto the defensive end. With seven minutes off the clock the Phoenix took their first lead of the half, watching Jordan Jenkins pour in seven of the team's first nine points.

After that point Cumberland kept the lead and comfortably led past the ten minute mark in the low scoring first half, seldom trading buckets but doing enough to keep a one shot lead for several long stretches. With less than five minutes on the clock Triston Conger drove to the rim and laid it off to a wide open Michael Nwoye, before Jenkins then found himself driving to the rim for a wide open layup to stretch the CU lead to 26-22.

The No. 1 ranked Lions did manage to respond as the first half came to a close however, going ahead 29-27, aided by a last second layup.

Freed used that late momentum shift to push the needle in the second half, pouring on early makes to stretch their lead out to double-digits for the first time all night. Cumberland traded twos for threes with the Lions and the shots began to fall for a FHU team that was in much need of them after such a low scoring first half.

Cumberland was unable to get themselves back into the game after falling behind, but that didn't stop several Phoenix from having excellent nights. Jordan Jenkins built upon his first half and had a career night, leading CU in scoring. Nick Brunetti was the second leading score for the Phoenix, pouring double-digit points and three assists.

Despite his efforts, it was the Lions night as they pulled away 85-61 in the end, securing a perfect regular season in conference play. The Phoenix will have a chance to end their season on a high note still though, welcoming in Bethel on Saturday afternoon for senior day festivities.
