Phoenix Fall in Home Opener

LEBANON, TENN. - - Cumberland opened conference play at home to St-Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday night. The game was evenly matched through all five sets but the Pomeroys eventually took the 3-2 win.

Joao Infante led the Phoenix with a monster 36 kills and a .475 hitting percentage, the senior also helped out at the net with two blocks. Francesco Corradini and Zendai Richards both had eight kills a piece, while Corradini led the Phoenix in kills with four. Alexander Heuer helped on the defensive end with 17 digs. Frederick Amegbletor had a steady evening hitting seven kills with two service aces and five digs. Cumberland had a .336 hitting percentage, while St Mary of the Woods had a .270. Errors at the service line held back the Phoenix attack.

Set one opened as a tightly contested battle with both sides trading momentum and neither team able to establish a clear advantage early. Cumberland gave up a five point run to St-Mary-of-the-Woods through a number of attack errors making it 6-9. Back to back kills by Hendrickson brought the Phoenix back level. Both teams battled back and forth with there being a more than a two point gap until the end when the Pomeroys eventually tussled their way to a 26-28 set point.

Set two followed a similar pattern early with both teams exchanging points and momentum. Cumberland began to settle into rhythm midway through the set, using consistent offensive production from Infante and Richards along with improved blocking presence at the net to build a small cushion. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods continued to pressure and kept the score close, but the Phoenix maintained their composure through the latter stages, limiting errors and controlling key rallies to close out the set 25–20.

The Pomeroys took an early 5-2 lead in the third set through a mix of kills and Cumberland attack errors. However, the Phoenix managed to work their way back into the set making it 8-8. Both teams traded three point runs, going 11-11. The Pomeroys had a 5-1 run and edged the game 12-16 and forced the Phoenix timeout. Both teams picked up a number of kills with Infante and Hendrickson leading the way for the Phoenix. Cumberland battled to stay in the set at 19-23 however the gap was too big as Pomeroys took the set 21-25.

The fourth set followed the same pattern as previous with very little separating the two teams. The set was balanced on a knife edge with it only being a one point score between the teams until Cumberland managed to gain some momentum and make it 12-10. The Phoenix went on a 4-1 run to put a little breathing space between themselves and the Pomeroys at 21-17. St-Mary-of-the-Woods grabbed a few points back but Cumberland remained composed and ensured the game would go to a fifth set at 25-21.

The fifth set was evenly matched with Infante and Corradini getting back to back kills and making it 3-1 to the Phoenix. The Pomeroys fought back, with the game in the balance at 8-8.  With a few errors St Mary of the Woods were able to take advantage and take the fifth set 13-15 to win the game.

Cumberland are back in action on February 27 as they face (RV) Oakland City University at the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
