Women's Basketball Falls to No. 2 Lions in MSC Quarterfinals

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - - The Cumberland Phoenix dropped their MSC Quarterfinal matchup to the No. 2-seed, Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions, 73-58.

Freed-Hardeman  set the tone early, racing out to a 22-6 first-quarter lead. Cumberland struggled to find rhythm offensively in the opening frame, shooting just 2-of-15 from the field and committing four turnovers as the Lady Lions built a double-digit cushion that they would not relinquish.

The Phoenix responded with a much stronger second quarter, outscoring Freed-Hardeman 17-14. Cumberland shot 40 percent in the period and trimmed the deficit to nine at halftime, 36-27. A late 8-3 run, sparked by a three-pointer from Faith Colston and multiple layups from Braley Bushman, helped stabilize the game heading into the break.

Bushman was the offensive catalyst all night, pouring in a game-high 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. She added five rebounds and was responsible for 12 of Cumberland's 23 fourth-quarter points as the Phoenix made a final push.

Cumberland continued to chip away in the third, shooting 50 percent from the floor and a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range in the quarter. A pair of triples from Bushman cut the margin to single digits briefly, but Freed-Hardeman answered every time CU began to make a charge, helping to maintain a 52-38 lead entering the fourth.

In the final period, the Phoenix posted their highest-scoring quarter with 23 points. Ty Buckley added eight of her nine points in the fourth, while Cumberland attacked the rim and earned trips to the line. However, the Lady Lions went 12-of-13 from the foul line in the closing frame to seal the 15-point win.

Ty Buckley finished with nine points and eight rebounds, while Faith Colston added eight points. Cumberland forced 14 Freed-Hardeman turnovers but was hurt by 19 giveaways of their own, which the Lady Lions converted into 20 points.

Cumberland will now have to wait until all conference tournaments have finished to see if the selection committee gives them an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament.
