Phoenix Power Past No. 12 Missouri Baptist with Five Homers in 10-6 Win

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland jumped out early and answered every No. 12 Missouri Baptist push, using a five-homer outburst for a 10-6 victory over the Spartans. 

The Phoenix plated runs in five different innings, highlighted by a three-run third and a two-run sixth, to even their record at 8-8 on the season.

Dylan LaRue finished 2-for-3 with two home runs, one from each side of the plate, three RBIs, and two runs scored, while Camden Williamson went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs, three runs scored, and a sacrifice fly. Gaines Haussin added two hits, a home run, and two RBIs. Aiden McDonald and Yuito Suzuki each recorded two-hit performances as Cumberland tallied 13 hits in the win.

On the mound, Carter Whitefield (1-0) earned the victory, tossing five innings while allowing one run on five hits and striking out eight. Jaron Keyser provided a strong bridge out of the bullpen with 2.1 innings and seven strikeouts, and Dom Giustino closed the door with a scoreless ninth.

Carlos Hidalgo paced the Spartans going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Jayden Orozco added in two hits and Griffin Brown drove in two on a double. 

Tyler Timmerman suffered the loss for Missouri Baptist only going three innings and surrendering four runs. Jackson Wells threw three innings striking out six. 

Williamson sparked the offense in the third inning, blasting a solo homer to right center before Dylan LaRue followed later in the frame with a two-run shot to center to give Cumberland a 3-0 cushion. 

The Phoenix extended the lead in the fourth as Williamson dropped down a bunt single that turned into two bases on a throwing error, allowing Yuito Suzuki to score. Brice Njezic later drove in a run with a groundout to make it 5-0.

Missouri Baptist (9-3) responded with a four-run sixth inning, stringing together three run-scoring hits to cut the deficit to 5-4. Cumberland wasted little time answering in the bottom half as Gaines Haussin launched a two-run homer to right, pushing the lead back to three at 7-4.

The Phoenix added insurance in the seventh when Charlie Rocca delivered a solo home run to left and Williamson lifted a sacrifice fly to score Aiden McDonald. 

After the Spartans trimmed the lead to 9-6 on a two-run homer in the eighth, LaRue sealed the scoring with his second long ball of the day, a solo shot to right in the bottom of the inning.

Cumberland is set to travel to Johnson University on Tuesday in Knoxville.
