Men's Volleyball Pull Reverse Sweep on the Bearcats

LEBANON, TENN. - - Men's volleyball pulled the reverse sweep on the Bearcats on Saturday night to claim their first conference victory.

Joao Infante led the way for the Phoenix in attack with 19 kills and a .378 hitting percentage, the Portuguese also helped out at the net with seven blocks. Nage Hendrickson had a fine night as well with 13 kills, while Zendai Richards chipped in with 10 and Frederick Amegbletor picked up six. Alexander Heuer had two service aces and 15 digs to help his team on the night. Francesco Corradini was important at the net with eight blocks to kill any Brescia attacks. Cumberland finished with a .220 hitting percentage and held their opponents to a .136.

The opening encounters of the first set were back and forth with both teams trying to gain a bit of momentum. Cumberland had two four point runs including back to back kills from Hendrickson and a big block at the net by Corradini and Infante which saw them hold a narrow 11-7 lead. The Bearcats then found some momentum of their own with an impressive 1-6 to take the 15-18 lead before Cumberland called a timeout to regroup. A couple of blocks by the Bearcats edged them further ahead 19-22. Although the Phoenix pulled back a few points it wasn't enough as the Bearcats took the first set 21-25

The Bearcats got themselves up early in the second set but the Phoenix battled back with a big kill from Richards to make it 6-6. Hendrickson and Infante were hitting kills to keep the Phoenix in it as the Bearcats held the 12-15 lead. Audi Sethman hit a service ace followed by an Amegbletor kill to bring the set level at 16-16. Both were playing some great volleyball late on in the set but it was Hendrickson kills that secured the 25-22 set point for the Phoenix.

Cumberland used their momentum from the second set to take the early lead at 9-5. A Bearcats four point run piled the pressure on Cumberland as Coach Padilla called a timeout to give his team a breather. The timeout paid dividends for the Phoenix as they went on a four point run to extend their lead before the Bearcats used one of their own timeouts. CU didn't let up and continued picking up points as they took the lead for the first time in the match winning the set 25-19.

The Phoenix had really found their groove by the fourth set, taking the early 9-3 lead. Three huge blocks at the net for the Phoenix by a combination of Infante, Amegbletor and Abdallah Roshdy pushed the Phoenix further ahead at 15-8. Cumberland had an impressive run at the end of the set including a Corradini service ace and kills from Hendrickson and Richards as the secured the set 25-20 and took victory at home.

The Phoenix will be back in action on March 3 as they travel to Illinois to take on Mount Vernon Nazarene University at 6PM.
