Softball Would Fight Through An Error-Filled Day and Split the Double Header With Union Commonwealth

BARBORSVILLE, Ky. -- Phoenix split the double header with the Bulldogs in a defensive two games. 

In the first game of the double header, the Phoenix infield had a sluggish start to the game, committing four errors in the first three innings. But the pitching from Avery Rauscher would keep the Bulldogs off of the board after three innings. 

Union Commonwealth would open the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single in the outfield. After a shutout fifth inning, Cumberland would get on the board as Deshea Oakley hits a ball over the short stop into left field and scores Elly Castle and Abby Chapelle to claim a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Cumberland would keep the Bulldogs off of the board in the sixth and seventh to win the first game 2-1 and end a four game losing streak. In the circle, Rauscher delivered 109 pitches, earned six strikeouts, one earned run, and one walk. The Phoenix scored two runs on four hits and committed five errors, while Union Commonwealth scored one run on six hits and committed one error. 

In the second game,  Madison Croxford would get the start on the mound, and start strong, but Union would score the first run of the game in the third inning after Cumberland's second error of the inning, and force a change to Madison Lancaster after a two RBI single. 

The offense would struggle in the first half of game two, with Elly Castle breaking up the no-hitter with a single in the fourth inning. In the seventh inning, the Phoenix would get a couple of hits and get two runs on the board after a Hailey Donato single. However, the Phoenix's comeback would be too little too late as Union Commonwealth would win the second game of the double header 3-2. 

The Phoenix would move to 3-5 on the season as the next double header is back at home as they host Johnson University on Tuesday March 3rd at 1:00 PM in Billy Dee Ross Stadium.
