Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Three-Headed Offense Led by Nwoye Pushes Phoenix Past Wildcats in McKenzie

MCKENZIE, Tenn. - - The Phoenix men's basketball team pulled out their second conference win in three games, taking down the Bethel Wildcats on their home floor, 83-68.

Cumberland shot 51.7% from the floor and 50.0% from three-point range, while the Phoenix scored 40 points in the paint, and converted 16-of-23 free throws. Michael Nwoye led all scorers with a 23 point double-double on 6-of-8 shooting, adding 10 rebounds and five blocks. Zaylin Rowland and Triston Conger both were not far behind as the pair of guards chipped in 19 and 18 points, respectively.

After five minutes there were just 12 combined points scored, though it was Cumberland who put themselves in the driver's seat after that slow start. A Rowland three-pointer ignited a 15-point swing where CU pulled out a 20-7 lead, a deficit the Wildcats would never overcome.

The Phoenix limited Bethel to just 28.1% shooting in the first half and held the Wildcats without a made three-pointer before the break. Conger caught fire early on, nailing a pair of deep triples to help push the lead to more than 20 midway through the half. Nwoye was also a force inside, punishing Bethel in the paint and at the free-throw line, helping Cumberland take a 22-point cushion into the break.

Bethel showed life in the second half, outscoring Cumberland 42-35 and cutting the deficit to as few as 8 points late, though it was never enough. Zaylin Rowland was again clutch in this game, extending the lead back to double-digits, while the Phoenix offense was efficient in the half despite being outscored, shooting an impressive 54% from the field in the second half.

Cumberland will have one day off before heading to Campbellsville, looking to get one back from the Tigers in the season series on Saturday.
