Cumberland Sweep Tigers in Three Sets

Bourbonnais, Il. - - Cumberland opened a weekend of volleyball with a victory over Olivet Nazarene, as they swept the Tigers in three sets to pick up their second victory of the season.

Cumberland totaled 42 kills with Joao Infante leading the way with 13 and a hitting percentage of .520. Frederick Amegbletor and Nage Hendrickson also put up nine kills each. Austin Kuehler was setting up his teammates all night as he picked up 31 assists and had a hitting percentage of .714.. On the defensive end Alexander Heuer was solid, with 16 digs. Cumberland had a team hitting percentage of .305 and held their opponents to a .147.

Cumberland claimed the opening set 25–17 after a competitive start that saw both teams trade points early. Back to back kills from Francesco Corradini and Amegbletor helped the Phoenix build momentum, and a service ace from Austin Kuehler started a six-point scoring run that allowed Cumberland to create separation. The Phoenix maintained steady offensive pressure late, closing out the set behind balanced attacking and consistent play.

The second set was fairly balanced with both teams putting up kills, making it 6-6. Henderson picked up a service ace, followed by a kill from Richards which got the Phoenix up 11-7. The teams battled with Olivet clawing back some points and staying within touching distance, however, four back to back kills from the Phoenix and three service errors by the Tigers ensured the set would go the way of Cumberland finishing 25-19.

Cumberland closed out the match with a strong 25–22 third-set win, pulling away late to complete the sweep. After a tight start, the Phoenix used a five-point run to build a 13–8 lead, highlighted by multiple kills from Joao Infante and Frederick Amegbletor. The Tigers grabbed two points, but another four point run by the Phoenix extended their lead to 20-13. Olivet Nazarene battled back to tie it late, but Cumberland responded with timely offense, including a key late kill from Nage Hendrickson, to secure the set and finish the match in straight sets.

The Phoenix are back in action tomorrow evening at 7pm as they travel to Missouri to face Maryville University.
