Phoenix Split Opening Weekend Series with Bears

LEBANON, Tenn. - - It was again a mixed day of results for the second day of opening weekend, as the Phoenix dropped game three 15-4 but rallied to tie the series 2-2 with a 6-1 win in the finale.

The Bears started game three by jumping all over the Phoenix, pouring eight runs in before the end of the opening frame. Pikeville loaded the bases with one out and a bases clearing double pushed their lead out to an early 3-0, logging all eight runs off just three total hits.

Cumberland managed a response shortly after with another leadoff home run via Dylan Larue, while Gaines Haussin managed to work his way around the bases off a wild pitch and fly out, before being driven in by Cohl Proctor to finish the first, down 8-2.

Pikeville added one more in the top of the second while both Brice Njezic and Dylan Larue took advantage of errors moving them across the basepaths, delivering two more runs for the Phoenix. The visiting Bears were shut out in the following inning by Carter Whitefield who went three full innings and gave up two runs, along with the same statline from Jaron Keyser.

In the 15-4 loss for the Phoenix there were bright spots as Haussin went 3-4 at the plate, aided by a 2-4 performance from Larue who also drove in a pair of runs.

Game four of the series was a slower burn with no runs scored through the opening three innings, seeing Mateo Santos pitching a gem early on, allowing just two hits to his three strikeouts. The Phoenix offense was sparked in the bottom of the third with six walks and three wild pitches from the Bears.

Chris Meilan opened the inning with a ten-pitch walk and Haussin followed him up with another walk before they were both pushed over by a wild pitch. That pair then parlayed those at-bats into a pair of runs from even more wild pitches. Wilser Then capped off the inning with another run to make it 3-0.

Santos continued his hot outing with another inning and a third of pitching, while his lineup backed him up with another trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Aiden McDonald was hit by the first pitch and pushed to third with a single into right field from Meilan. Haussin slapped a single to the pitchers left and was out at first but did allow McDonald across the plate, while also pushing Meilan to third. Dylan Larue compounded that with a double to centerfield, scoring the runner and putting his courtesy runner, Wyatt Hurt, in position to score on a Wilser Then double.

Coming in for Santos, Kyle Nyblod was one out shy of a save, striking out one and allowing just two hits in two and third innings of work. The bounceback performance in game four meant the Phoenix would split their opening weekend with the Bears, 2-2.

Cumberland will have a short rest as the Phoenix head off to Pulaski for one game against UT Southern on Tuesday, kicking off at 2PM.
