Volleyball Fall in Four Against St-Mary-of-the-Woods

ST. MARY-WOODS, IND.- - The Phoenix tried to gather momentum and rally late in the match but it wasn't enough as the Pomeroys took the game 1-3.

Joao Infante had another impressive game with a massive 21 kills and a .261 hitting percentage, while Nage Hendrickson and Zendai Richards both had nine each. Richards also found success at the service line with three aces. Francesco Corradini chipped in with four kills of his own. Alexander Heuer was busy on the defensive side, with 12 digs, while Abdallah Roshdy finished with 22 assists. The Phoenix finished with a .192 hitting percentage.

The first set saw the Pomeroys take a narrow lead and hold onto it until Cumberland were able to bring it level at 10-10 thanks to a Roshdy kill. St-Mary-of-the-Woods didn't waste time taking their lead back with a four point run to make it 12-16 and force a Cumberland timeout. The Pomeroys had found their rhythm and continued to pick up points hitting three more, after the timeout. The Phoenix clawed back a few points but it wasn't enough as the Pomeroys took the first set 18-25.

Cumberland responded quickly in the second set going on a four point run of their own to take a 10-7 before the Pomeroys took a timeout. After the break Cumberland managed to pick up three more points and piled the pressure on the Pomeroys at 15-18. St-Mary-of-the-Woods managed to overcome the pressure and responded with a four point run to bring the set level at 17-17. The momentum took a swing in favor of the home side and with a three point run at the end of the set, they were able to take it 22-25.

Cumberland opened the third set strong with a four point run including two Infante kills before Corradini added another. Infante came up big for the Phoenix with another kill in what was another good run of play for CU as they took the 11-5 lead. Cumberland continued to attack at the net, and although the Pomeroys grabbed a few points it wasn't enough as the Phoenix took the set 25-18 and forced the fourth.

Going into the fourth set it was the Pomeroys who got off to a flying start, taking the early 5-2 lead. The home side picked up momentum and caught the Phoenix on the back foot as they extended their lead to 7-14. Cumberland managed to go on a five point lead due to a number of Pomeroy errors and a Hendrickson kill, however, the Pomeroys managed to hold the narrow lead and take the fourth set 22-25.

The Phoenix will look to bounce back on Tuesday as they travel to Kentucky to take on No.4 Campbellsville University. The match is set to begin at 7PM CT.
