Donato Delivers Go-Ahead Run in Seventh Inning to Take Series Opener from Bethel

MCKENZIE, Tenn - - The Cumberland softball team broke their deadlock in the top of the eighth, scoring the go-ahead run and more to take down the Bethel Wildcats in the series opener, 8-6.

The Phoenix jumped on the Wildcats in the top of the first inning to go ahead, though it was a back and forth duel, seeing both teams score in each of the first three innings to see the home side lead 4-3. Abby Chappell delivered the first run with an RBI single in the opening frame, scoring Karley Daughrity, while Karsyn France added an RBI double in the third to put Cumberland ahead through two and half innings.

Bethel responded with a strong middle stretch, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Kalani Hernandez in the third and a solo home run from Kayleigh Dunn in the fourth. That surge gave the Wildcats a 5-3 lead and put Cumberland on its heels, though the Phoenix seemingly were up for the fight.

The momentum shifted in the fifth inning as Cumberland strung together several hits, all while sitting on two outs. Sara Brogdon kicked off the run with a single which Kennedy Scott and Deshea Oakley then followed up with a walk and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases.

Karley Daughrity and Hailey Donato each then sent in consecutive singles to drive in runs during the three-run fifth, flipping the score back in the Phoenix's favor at 6-5. Bethel answered to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom half, setting up a decisive final two innings.

In the seventh, Cumberland delivered the knockout punch. Daughrity singled before Donato came through with an RBI double to give the Phoenix the lead, and Natalie Rector followed with an RBI single to provide insurance and make it 8-6, which is how the game ended in the Phoenix's favor.

Offensively, Cumberland was led by Daughrity, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Donato added two hits and two RBIs. Chappell also contributed with two hits, two walks, and an RBI.

In the circle, Madison Lancaster provided a steady relief effort to get herself the win, allowing just one run over four innings while striking out three, helping to shut down Bethel after their quick start.

Cumberland will be right back at it against the Wildcats tomorrow afternoon, looking to take the season series from the home side.
