Phoenix Unable to Slow No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett in Saturday Sweep

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Baseball dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader to No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett at Woody Hunt Stadium, as the Grizzlies completed the series sweep over the Phoenix.

Cumberland was limited to eight total hits across the two games while Georgia Gwinnett's offense produced 24 runs on 30 hits in the twin bill. Dylan LaRue recorded Cumberland's lone hit in game one with a triple, while the Phoenix collected seven hits in the second game, led by Aiden McDonald's two-hit effort. With the losses, Cumberland moves to 13-20 on the year.

In the opener, Georgia Gwinnett used a great start and timely hitting to come away with a 9-0 win.

The Grizzlies struck first in the opening inning, using a leadoff single and a RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead. Georgia Gwinnett added three more runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run from Peyton Watts and an RBI double from Wilbert Espinal to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Georgia Gwinnett broke the game open in the fifth. Jay O'Neill led off the inning with a solo home run before Jackson Legg and courtesy runner Vick Gann came around to score later in the frame on Payton Fort's two-run single, pushing the margin to 7-0. The Grizzlies added two more runs in the eighth scoring a run on a doubleplay ball and an RBI single from Espinal to reach the 9-0 final.

Cumberland's best scoring chance came in the second inning when LaRue tripled down the right field line with one out, but the Phoenix were unable to bring him home. LaRue accounted for the only hit of the game for Cumberland, while Wilser Then and Camden Williamson each drew walks as part of four free passes issued by Georgia Gwinnett pitching.

Shane Anderson earned the win for the Grizzlies, tossing seven one-hit shutout innings with 10 strikeouts. Caiden Johnson worked the final two innings in relief.

Carter Whitefield took the loss for Cumberland after allowing three runs in 2.1 innings. Mateo Santos threw 2.2 innings in relief, while Sora Nishijima, Lucas Frank, and Kai Hanasaki also saw time on the mound.

In game two, Georgia Gwinnett jumped out early once again and never looked back in a 15-2 victory.

The Grizzlies wasted no time, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Payton Fort opened the game with a solo home run, Peyton Watts followed with an RBI triple, Lance Bratlien delivered an RBI double, and Jackson Legg capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

Georgia Gwinnett added a run in the second and two more in the third, including a solo home run from Trey Smith, to build a 7-0 advantage before Cumberland answered in the bottom half of the third. Yuito Suzuki drew a walk and scored on Wilser Then's RBI double to center, putting the Phoenix on the board.

The Grizzlies answered immediately with a solo home run from Watts in the fourth before breaking the game open in the fifth. Fort delivered his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to right, and Georgia Gwinnett added two more runs later in the inning to take a 13-1 lead. Vick Gann added a solo homer in the sixth, and the Grizzlies tacked on another run in the seventh on an RBI single from Ozzie Patterson.

Cumberland put together a rally in the sixth, loading the bases on singles from McDonald, Caleb Royer, and Cohl Proctor, but a double play ended the threat. The Phoenix scored their second run in the seventh when Suzuki doubled and later came home on an RBI single by LaRue.

McDonald led Cumberland with two hits in the nightcap, while LaRue, Then, Royer, Proctor, and Suzuki each added one hit. Then and LaRue drove in the two Phoenix runs.

Jaron Keyser was charged with the loss after allowing five runs in 1.1 innings. Kyle Niebow, Dom Guistino, Kyle Nyblod, and Noah Couch all worked in relief.

Peyton Castellow earned the win for Georgia Gwinnett after allowing one run over six innings with 10 strikeouts.
