Cumberland Drops Road Doubleheader to Georgia Gwinnett

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland Softball battled early but couldn't overcome Georgia Gwinnett's offensive push, falling in both games of a doubleheader as the Grizzlies used timely hitting and strong pitching to secure the sweep.

In game one, Cumberland got on the board in the top of the third inning. Sara Brogdon worked a leadoff walk, and Kennedy Scott followed with a walk of her own to put two runners on with nobody out. Karley Daughrity delivered with a single to center field, bringing home Brogdon for the game's first run. However, Berry limited the damage and worked out of the inning without allowing another run.

Avery Rauscher got the start in the circle for the Phoenix and kept the Grizzlies off balance through the first three innings.

Georgia Gwinnett took control in the bottom of the fourth. Lackey singled to bring home Jenkins and tie the game while keeping the bases loaded. Burch followed with a single to give the Grizzlies the lead, scoring both Kemp and Roussel.

The Grizzlies added on in the fifth inning, capitalizing on multiple opportunities. Beaver scored on a throw down to second, Roussel singled to bring home McGuinn, and Jenkins crossed the plate on a Burch fielder's choice. Burch later stole second, allowing Roussel to score on another throw, and Brooke Rockhold capped the inning with a double to right field that brought in Burch, extending the lead to 8-1.

Berry held Cumberland to just one run, tossing a complete game to earn the win.

In game two, Madison Lancaster got the start for the Phoenix.

Georgia Gwinnett struck first as Roussel singled to left field and advanced to second on an error. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kemp, she came around to score on a passed ball. Lancaster settled in and recorded the next two outs to limit further damage.

The Grizzlies continued to apply pressure in the fourth inning. Crumley reached on a fielder's choice to score Jenkins, Burch brought home Roussel on a bases-loaded hit by pitch, and Kemp added another run on a sacrifice fly from Fadely to make it 4-0.

Cumberland threatened in the top of the sixth when Daughrity drew a leadoff walk and Hailey Donato followed with a single up the middle, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. However, Helsom worked out of the jam, retiring the next three batters to keep the Phoenix off the board.

Georgia Gwinnett added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Burch doubled to right field, scoring Crumley and Kemp.

Tatum Helsom completed the shutout, striking out five and holding Cumberland scoreless to secure the sweep
.

The Phoenix will hit the road to face Mid-South Conference foe Georgetown College for a three-game series.
