Volleyball Storm to 3-0 Victory over Rio Grande

RIO GRANDE, OHIO. - - Cumberland weathered the Red Storm on Friday night taking the victory in three straight sets.

Nage Hendrickson had a successful night for Cumberland with nine kills and a .600 hitting percentage, the senior also chipped in with two blocks. Zendai Richards and Joao Infante had eight and seven kills respectively, and Infante added three blocks as well. Francesco Corradini went four for five in kills and chipped in with three blocks. On the defensive end Alexander Heuer had 11 digs. The Phoenix finished with a .311 hitting percentage. The Phoenix also limited their number of attack errors to only 11 while forcing their opponents to 26.

The first set was back and forth with both teams picking up points early on but struggling to create any separation, until the Phoenix picked up three points including a Richards kill to make it 12-8. A Hendrickson block followed by a kill from the Senior ensured Cumberland kept their three point lead at 18-15. With this three point cushion the Phoenix were able to see out the remainder of the set as Hendrickson got the final kill to make it 25-21.

The second set followed a similar pattern to the first in the opening encounters with both teams picking up points, however, it was the Phoenix who took the early lead after a five point run including a kill from Infante and Frederick Amegbletor to make the set 15-9 in favor of CU. Cumberland had the wind in their sails by this point a four point run at the end secured a comfortable second set 25-16.

There was no more than one point separating the two teams until an Audi Sethman service ace followed by a Red Storm attack error gave the Phoenix a narrow 11-8 lead. A 5-1 run from Cumberland extended their lead to 15-10. Although Rio Grande fought back with a three point 5-1 run of their own it wasn't enough as back to back kills for the Phoenix ensured the set was theirs and took the match in three straight sets.

The Phoenix have a quick turn around as they will now prepare to play Indiana East University in Richmond, Indiana. The match is set to start at 12PM CT. Catch the game live on Prestosports.
