Phoenix Roll to Four-Game Sweep Behind Hot Bats

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland competed a four-game sweep over Siena Heights with a 18-7 win in game one followed by a 5-3 win in game two on Saturday at Woody Hunt Stadium.

In game one, Cumberland exploded for 14 runs over the first three innings and never looked back, rolling past Siena Heights by an 18-7.

The Phoenix pounded out 19 hits, including two home runs, to secure the seven-inning run-rule victory. Siena Heights collected 11 hits in the loss, led by Jaozef Del Rosario's three-hit day and two hits from Jack Semler, but Cumberland's explosive start proved the difference as the Phoenix secured the home victory.

Aiden McDonald led the offensive onslaught, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBI and the three-run homer. Charlie Rocca matched him with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in three runs with a homer and a double while scoring three times. Cohl Proctor went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored, and Camden Williamson added two hits and three RBI. Dylan LaRue chipped in two hits and two RBI as seven different Phoenix recorded at least one hit.

On the mound, Carter Whitefield (2-0) earned the win, tossing five innings while allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and just one walk. Jaron Keyser worked the final two innings in relief.

Cumberland wasted no time setting the tone in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff walk and single put traffic on the bases, McDonald launched a three-run homer to center to ignite an eight-run inning. The Phoenix sent 12 men to the plate in the frame, adding RBI knocks from Proctor and McDonald, a sacrifice fly from Williamson, and capitalizing on a pair of Siena Heights errors to take an 8-0 lead.

The offense kept rolling in the second as Gabriel Reyes and Williamson delivered back-to-back RBI singles to stretch the advantage to 10-0. An inning later, Proctor drove in another run with a single before Rocca crushed a three-run homer to center, pushing the lead to 14-0 through three.

Siena Heights responded with two runs in the fourth and added single tallies in the fifth and two in both the sixth and seventh innings, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

Cumberland answered again in the fifth, taking advantage of another Saints error before Williamson delivered an RBI single and Dylan LaRue ripped a two-run double to center to cap a four-run inning and extend the lead to 18-3.

Siena Height scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh for the 18-7 final score.
Cumberland held off the Saints for a 5-3 win in a weather-shortened contest to complete the sweep. The game was called after five innings due to weather.

The Phoenix jumped in front early with a three-run first inning. Yuito Suzuki opened the frame with a single and LaRue followed with a double to put two in scoring position. McDonald then shot a single up the middle to plate both runners and give Cumberland a 2-0 edge. Later in the inning, JT Kelenic added an RBI single to score Caleb Royer and stretch the lead to 3-0.

Siena Heights answered in the third, stringing together three runs to even the score. Mason Baer doubled home the first run, Mac Melvin followed with an RBI single, and Jack Semler delivered a run-scoring double to tie the game at 3-3.

Cumberland quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning. Royer led off with a double and came home when Jordan Sheridan singled to center, putting the Phoenix back on top 4-3. In the fourth, Suzuki added insurance by sending a solo homer to right field to make it 5-3.

That proved to be enough for the Cumberland pitching staff. Colson Smith got the start and worked 2.2 innings, allowing three runs while striking out four. Watson Storey came on in relief and was strong the rest of the way, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings while surrendering just one hit to earn the win.

Suzuki led the offense with a 3-for-4 day, scoring twice and blasting his home run. LaRue added two hits, while Proctor and Kelenic each collected two hits as part of Cumberland's 13-hit effort. McDonald drove in two runs, and Sheridan finished with the go-ahead RBI in the third.

Cumberland returns to action Tuesday on the road at Bryan.
