LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland men's tennis team battled the No. 7-ranked University of the Cumberlands to a 5-2 loss this afternoon.

The Phoenix opened the match in doubles play where the Patriots secured the early point by sweeping all three courts. At No. 1 doubles, Carlos Morillas and Magnus Johansen fell 6-0 to the Patriots' duo of Darius Kuster and Gabriele Solda.

The No. 2 pairing of Arthur Fernandes and Matheus Guarnieri pushed their match deep but came up short in a 7-5 decision. Cumberland's Mateus Mori and Mohamed Bouhlel also battled at No. 3 doubles before dropping a tight 7-5 result as the Patriots claimed the doubles point.

Cumberland responded with strong efforts in singles play, highlighted by a dramatic victory from Arthur Fernandes at the top position. Fernandes rallied after dropping the opening set to defeat Jacopo Cianfarini 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 in a tightly contested match tiebreak.

The Phoenix added another point at No. 3 singles where Mohamed Bouhlel delivered a solid performance, defeating the Patriots in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.

Despite those efforts, the Patriots secured the remaining singles courts to clinch the match. Carlos Morillas fell at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-1, while Mateus Mori was forced to retire in his match at No. 4 singles after trailing 6-3, 4-0. At No. 5 singles, Magnus Johansen dropped 6-0, 6-1, and Matheus Guarnieri fell at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-0.

With the result, Cumberland moves to 4-5 overall on the season, all while competing against one of the NAIA's top-ranked programs. The Phoenix will head to Pulaski on Wednesday to take on the UT Southern Firehawks.
