Phoenix Rally for Game One Win, Settle for Split with Lions

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland split a Mid-South Conference doubleheader with Freed-Hardeman on Friday at Woody Hunt Stadium, rallying for an 8-7 victory in the opener before falling 14-4 in game two.

In game one, Cumberland totaled eight runs on 11 hits with four walks, highlighted by a big day from Aidan McDonald, who finished 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Gabriel Reyes added a 2-for-3 performance with a home run and an RBI, while Cohl Proctor reached base four times, going 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Gaines Haussin chipped in an RBI single, and Camden Williamson scored twice while swiping two bases.

On the mound, Lucas Frank earned the win in relief, allowing one run over two innings, while Kyle Nyblod secured the save with a scoreless seventh. Logan Baskin got the start, surrendering six runs on 10 hits. 

Freed-Hardeman recorded 15 hits in the contest, led by Drake Blackwood, who went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI. JJ Pruneau added two hits and two RBI, while Hunter Ryan went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Brennen Gibson and Brooks Jones each tallied two hits as the Lions built an early lead.

Colton Bryant tossed five innings giving up seven hits and four runs before he exited the game with the lead. Justin Smarr gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning to get the loss. 

Freed-Hardeman struck first in the opening inning as Anderson singled ahead of a two-run home run by Blackwood to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Cumberland answered in the second inning. Cohl Proctor singled and later scored on an RBI double from Cole Freeman. Reyes followed with a single before Williamson brought home Freeman with a sacrifice bunt to tie the game at 2-2.

The Lions regained control in the third inning when Pruneau delivered a two-run double, scoring Gibson and Jones to make it 4-2.

Freed-Hardeman extended the lead in the fourth inning with two more runs. A sacrifice fly from Trace Anderson plated one run before an RBI single by Brennen Gibson pushed the advantage to 6-2.

Cumberland chipped away in the bottom of the fourth as Proctor scored on a ground ball double play, trimming the deficit to 6-3.

Blackwood struck again in the fifth inning with a solo home run to stretch the lead to 7-3.

The Phoenix responded in the bottom half of the inning when Williamson scored on an RBI single from McDonald, cutting the margin to 7-4.

Cumberland completed the comeback in the sixth inning. Reyes led off with a solo home run to make it 7-5. Williamson walked and stole second before scoring on an RBI single from Haussin to pull within one. Two batters later, McDonald delivered the decisive blow with a two-run home run to left field, giving the Phoenix their first lead of the game at 8-7.

Nyblod closed the door in the seventh inning, working around a leadoff double and turning a game-ending double play to secure the win.

Freed-Hardeman answered Cumberland's game one rally with a decisive offensive performance in game two, defeating the Phoenix 14-4.

Cumberland totaled four runs on 12 hits in the contest, led by Wilser Then, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored. Gaines Haussin added a 2-for-4 effort with a solo home run, while Gabriel Reyes and Charlie Rocca each recorded two hits. Rocca drove in a run, and Corbin Sanchez also added an RBI. 

Carter Whitefield took the loss, allowing seven runs, five earned, over 3.1 innings, while Watson Storey and Kyle Niebow combined to cover the remaining innings.

Freed-Hardeman erupted for 14 runs on 17 hits, paced by Drake Blackwood's 4-for-5 performance with a home run, double, and three RBI. Alejandro Diaz added three hits, including a home run and four RBI, while Brooks Jones homered and drove in three runs. Trace Anderson finished with three hits and reached base four times, and JJ Pruneau collected two hits and an RBI. 

Hunter McLemore earned the win on the mound, tossing five innings and allowing three runs and Jackson Fitzwilson earned a three inning save surrendering just one run. 

Freed-Hardeman opened the scoring in the first inning as Anderson doubled before Jones launched a two-run home run to left field for a 2-0 lead.

Cumberland responded in the second inning when Caleb Royer singled and later scored on an RBI single by Rocca, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The Phoenix evened the score in the third inning as Haussin led off with a solo home run to right field, tying the game at 2-2.

Freed-Hardeman broke the game open in the fourth inning with five runs. Blackwood led off with a solo home run before the Lions capitalized on a Cumberland error during a sacrifice bunt to plate another run. Ryan followed with a two-run single, and Jones added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 7-2.

Cumberland answered in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together three consecutive singles from Wilser Then, Gabriel Reyes, and Charlie Rocca. Corbin Sanchez drove in a run with a groundout to make it 7-3.

Freed-Hardeman added to the lead in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Alejandro Diaz, extending the advantage to 8-3. The Phoenix threatened in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back base hits to start the inning. However, the Lions turned a triple play on a line drive up the middle to take the air out of the Phoenix dugout. 

The Lions pushed across another run in the seventh inning when Pruneau delivered an RBI single to score Blackwood, making it 9-3.

Freed-Hardeman put the game out of reach in the eighth inning with a five-run frame. Blackwood doubled in two runs before Diaz followed with a bases-clearing double to extend the lead to 14-3.

Cumberland scored its final run in the bottom of the eighth as Then launched a solo home run to right-center field, trimming the final margin to 14-4.

The Phoenix and Lions will play the final game of the series tomorrow at Woody Hunt Stadium at noon. Senior Day festivities will take place following the game.
