Cumberland Walks Patriots Off On Senior Day to Take Season Series

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland rallied late and walked off the Cumberlands Patriots for a 3-2 win in the Phoenix's regular season finale.

After a walkoff win and a run-rule loss on the first day of the series, everything was on the line this afternoon with both teams playing for a win in the rubber match. Senior efforts happened before the game, honoring four members of the Phoenix team; Sara Brogdon, Abby Chappell, Madison Croxford, and Karley Daughrity, all of whom have had a big impact on the series and would again in the final game of the series.

The Patriots struck first in the top of the fourth, using an RBI single and an RBI double to take a 2-0 lead. Cumberland answered in the sixth inning, loading the bases with a pair of walks from Brogdon, Kennedy Scott, and a hit by pitch from Karsyn France. With two outs in the inning and all the pressure on the Phoenix, Karley Daughrity ripped a two-run single down the left field line to even the score at 2-2.

Avery Rauscher stepped back into the circle for the final three outs and threw up yet another zero on the scoreboard, setting up her lineup for more heroics on senior day. In the seventh, Elly Castle opened the frame with a single and Abby Chappell followed with a bunt hit. Sara Brogdon then dropped down another bunt single to load the bases with nobody out.

Natalie Rector delivered the game-winner moments later, lining a single up the middle to bring home Castle and send the Phoenix into celebration. Daughrity paced the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Castle added two hits and scored twice. Chappell, Brogdon, and Rector each recorded a hit in the victory.

Rauscher tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing two runs on nine hits while earning the win. She worked out of multiple jams and held the Patriots scoreless over the final three innings when the Phoenix bats got to work.

The Phoenix will now await seeding in the Mid-South Conference tournament with the first game set for Tuesday at the host site, as the bracket will be announced with the conclusion of all regular season MSC games.
