Phoenix Storm to Senior Night Sweep

LEBANON, Tenn. - -  Cumberland celebrated their seniors Joao Infante, Francesco Corradini, Nage Hendrickson, and Zendai Richards in fine fashion with a sweep over Rio Grande on Friday night.

Joao Infante had an impressive night with 15 kills on a .464 hitting percentage, while Zendai Richards had seven and Francesco Corradini had five. Corradini also has seven blocks. Alexander Heuer helped defensively with nine digs, while Austin Kuehler had 30 assists on the night. The Phoenix finished with a hitting .312 hitting percentage and held their opponents to a .182.

The visitors found themselves up 1-5 early with four kills in a row to put pressure on the Phoenix. The Phoenix answered with a 5-1 run of their own to make it level at 6-6. Another four point run from the Red Storm gave them a small lead, however, a five point run from Cumberland seen them take the lead back and forced a Rio Grande timeout as the set was going back and forth. An Infante kill followed by a block from Corradini and Kuehler pushed CU further ahead. Cumberland had control and picked up two more points to take the set.

The second set was back and forth in the early stages with both teams getting points on the board early. It was the Phoenix who went on a four point run breakaway from the Red Storm. Cumberland were in the driver's seat and kept their lead through some impressive kills from Infante and Richards as well as a number of blocks from Corradini.

The third set started much like the second with very little to separate the two sides, with CU only leading by one point at 7-6. Rio Grande ensured they stayed within touching distance, clawing back points to ensure the Phoenix didn't run away with it. A four point run from the Phoenix which included an Infante service ace and a Corradini kill widened the gap at 17-13 as the Red Storm called a timeout. The Phoenix were solid on the defensive end with another block coming from Amegbletor and Kuehler to kill any Rio attack.

The Phoenix will be back in action on Tuesday April 7 as they host No.5 Campbellsville in their last home game of the season.
