Santos Throws Complete Game Gem to Advance in MSC Winner's Bracket

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-- Behind a masterful outing from Mateo Santos, Cumberland blanked Campbellsville Tigers 1-0 on Wednesday night to continue its run through the Mid-South Conference Baseball Tournament winner's bracket at Bowling Green Ballpark.

Cumberland (25-25) scratched across the game's only run in the second inning and made it stand, finishing with five hits in a tightly contested pitcher's duel.

Caleb Royer led the Phoenix offensively, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and scoring the lone run. Camden Williamson drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly, while Gaines Haussin, Gabriel Reyes, and Cohl Proctor each added a hit.

Santos was the story of the night, tossing a complete-game shutout. The right-hander scattered eight hits across nine innings, walked three, and struck out four while working out of multiple jams to preserve the win.

Campbellsville (26-22) collected eight hits but was unable to break through against Santos, leaving 10 runners on base.

Antony Gilbert paced the Tigers with a 2-for-3 performance, while Kleysen Gabruck, Jaxson Grubbs, and Thomas Krueger each recorded hits.

Joe McBride matched Santos pitch-for-pitch, going the distance while allowing just one run on five hits and striking out eight in the tough-luck loss.

Cumberland manufactured the game's only run in the second inning. Royer led off with a double down the right field line and later scored on Williamson's sacrifice fly to right, giving the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.

From there, both pitchers settled in. Santos worked around traffic in the fifth inning, stranding the tying and go-ahead runs, and escaped another threat in the eighth after Campbellsville put two runners on with one out.

In the ninth, Campbellsville reached with one out, but Santos induced a pair of routine outs to seal the shutout and send Cumberland further into the winner's bracket.

Cumberland remains unbeaten in the Mid-South Conference Tournament and advances deeper into the winner's bracket to take on Bethel at 11:00 a.m.
