Cumberland Falls in Walk-Off Heartbreaker in MSC Championship

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.--Cumberland battled back late but came up just short as the 5th-ranked Cumberlands Patriots walked off with a 7-6 victory Saturday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.

The loss ends Cumberland's season at 26-27, while the Patriots (46-8) claim the conference title after a tightly contested championship game that featured multiple lead changes and late-inning drama.

Cumberland finished with 10 hits and showed resilience throughout, highlighted by a five-run eighth inning that erased a two-run deficit and briefly put the Phoenix in front.

Cole Freeman went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Wilser Then recorded three hits and an RBI. Camden Williamson added a 3-for-3 performance with a run scored, and Aidan McDonald chipped in two hits and an RBI.

On the mound, Colson Smith kept Cumberland in the game early, allowing just one earned run across 4.0 innings. Logan Baskin followed with three scoreless innings of relief before the late innings turned into a back-and-forth battle.

Cumberlands totaled 11 hits and capitalized on key opportunities late in the game.

Derick Andiarena paced the Patriots with two hits and two RBI, including a solo home run, while Jay Flynn added a pair of RBI. Pedro Vasquez also contributed two hits as the Patriots mounted the decisive rally in the ninth inning.

The Patriots struck first in the fourth inning, taking advantage of two Cumberland errors to plate a pair of unearned runs and grab a 2-0 lead.

Cumberland responded in the fifth when Cole Freeman doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Gaines Haussin, trimming the deficit to 2-1.

Cumberlands answered immediately in the bottom half with a solo home run from Andiarena to extend the lead to 3-1, and the score held until the late innings.

The Phoenix delivered their biggest moment in the eighth inning. After Williamson reached and LaRue worked a walk, McDonald tied the game with an RBI single that was aided by an outfield error, allowing two runs to score. Then followed with an RBI double to give Cumberland its first lead at 4-3, and Freeman capped the rally with a two-run single to push the advantage to 6-3.

The Patriots answered in the bottom half, taking advantage of defensive miscues to plate three unearned runs and tie the game at 6-6 heading into the ninth.

In the final frame, Cumberland threatened but was unable to push across a run, setting up the decisive bottom of the ninth. Cumberlands loaded the bases and ultimately walked it off on a wild pitch, scoring the winning run to secure the championship.

Cumberland's tournament run showcased the toughness of this group, as the Phoenix fought their way to the championship game with key comebacks and consistent performances along the way.
