Goal Gluttony For The Phoenix in Season Opening 8-0 Win Over Bryan College

DAYTON, Tenn. - - Cumberland University men's soccer kicked off its 2026 campaign in strong form, cruising to an 8-0 victory over the Bryan College Lions.

Luis Cerejo and David Barbakadze led the offensive gluttony, combining for five goals and six assists in the victory. Cerejo recorded two goals and four assists, while Barbakadze posted a hat trick with three goals and two assists.

Cerejo opened the scoring in the seventh minute, finishing off a sequence assisted by Barbakadze and Harold Perea. Cerejo struck again in the 18th minute, this time assisted by Barbakadze, giving Cumberland a 2-0 advantage.

Just under two minutes later, Barbakadze found the back of the net off a Cerejo assist to make it 3-0. Barbakadze added his second goal of the night in the 30th minute, assisted by Wesley Mendoza, as the Phoenix carried a 4-0 advantage into halftime.

The onslaught never slowed in the second half as Cumberland continued its offensive barrage after the break, with Adrian Jogerst scoring just over three minutes into the second half to push the lead to 5-0.

Barbakadze completed his hat trick in the 57th minute, converting a Cerejo assist for his third goal of the night and Cumberland's sixth.

The Phoenix added two more goals in the final five minutes. Rex Pearce scored in the 86th minute off another Cerejo assist before Conor Crowley capped the scoring with a goal in the 90th minute, also assisted by Cerejo.

Cumberland's defense held Bryan without a corner kick while the Phoenix earned six. Pau Gelabert made one save to record the shutout, with Maddox Robertson also seeing 45 minutes in goal. The Phoenix will open their account at home this Saturday as they welcome in the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs at 3 PM.
