Volleyball Earn Split on Day One of OUAZ Invitational

SURPRISE, Ariz.--Cumberland volleyball split its opening day at the OUAZ Invitational on Friday, sweeping Park-Gilbert in three sets before falling to host Ottawa University-Arizona in straight sets at Faith Arena.

Carola Schnidrig posted 15 kills with just one error as Cumberland opened the OUAZ Invitational with a dominant 3-0 sweep over Park-Gilbert on Friday afternoon.

The Phoenix won by scores of 25-16, 29-27 and 25-10 to improve to 6-4 on the season.

Schnidrig delivered a highly efficient performance, hitting .667 on 21 attacks while adding two service aces, two block assists and six digs. Carlee Rogers filled the stat sheet with eight kills, 21 assists and 10 digs, while Liberty Shadix finished with seven kills and three block assists.

Cumberland controlled the match offensively, finishing with 45 kills and a .284 hitting percentage. Park-Gilbert was limited to 24 kills and a .055 attacking percentage. The Phoenix also held a 9-2 advantage in service aces.

The opening set was tied at 4-4 before AJ Bryant sparked a six-point Cumberland run from the service line. Bryant recorded two aces during the stretch as the Phoenix built a 10-4 advantage. Park cut the deficit to one at 11-10, but Cumberland answered with three consecutive points and never relinquished the lead. Emma Chavers closed the frame with two aces during a five-point run as the Phoenix took the set, 25-16. Cumberland hit .429 with 15 kills and only three errors in the opener.

Park raced out to a 7-1 lead in the second set before the Phoenix began to chip away. Trailing 12-7, Cumberland reeled off nine straight points behind Bryant's serve to move in front, 16-12.

The Buccaneers battled back and erased a 24-22 deficit to extend the set. The teams traded points until a Rogers kill gave Cumberland a 28-27 edge, and a Park attack error secured the 29-27 victory.

Cumberland quickly took control of the third set behind back-to-back Schnidrig aces, opening a 4-0 advantage. The Phoenix stretched the lead to 9-4 before another extended run put the match away. Bryant served Cumberland through seven consecutive points as the Phoenix pushed the margin to 16-6. Cumberland held Park to five kills and forced nine attack errors in the set, closing the match with a commanding 25-10 win.

Bryant finished with four service aces and three kills, while Chavers contributed 14 assists, three digs and two aces. Kaleigh Glass joined Rogers with a team-high 10 digs. Jacey Hubbell added five kills and two block assists.

Cumberland finished the night with a straight sets loss to host Ottawa University-Arizona. The Spirit defeated the Phoenix by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-14.

Cumberland led for much of the opening set after breaking a 6-6 tie with three straight points. The Phoenix later used a Schnidrig kill and service ace followed by a Bianca Guceanu kill to build their largest advantage at 13-8. OUAZ responded with a 7-2 run to pull even at 15-15. The teams traded points until the Spirit broke an 18-18 tie with three consecutive points. After a Jacey Hubbell kill briefly stopped the run, OUAZ scored the final four points to take the set, 25-19.

The Phoenix again started quickly in the second set. Consecutive kills from Hubbell, Schnidrig and Shadix pushed Cumberland in front, 8-3. The Spirit answered with five straight points to tie the frame before the teams exchanged the next several rallies. Glass delivered an ace to put Cumberland ahead 14-13, but OUAZ responded with a six-point run to seize a 19-14 advantage. The Phoenix could not close the gap as the Spirit finished the set with a 25-18 win.

The third set was tied at 5-5 before OUAZ used a five-point run to take control. Cumberland pulled within three at 10-7, but the Spirit answered with another surge to extend the lead to 17-9. The Phoenix scored three straight points behind the serve of AJ Bryant to make it 17-13. OUAZ answered by winning seven consecutive rallies, however, and closed the match with a 25-14 victory.
