Mendoza Scores Twice as Cumberland Holds of Truett, 3-2

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland University men's soccer team remained perfect on the young season Monday afternoon, earning a 3-2 victory over Truett McConnell University at Lindsey Donnell Stadium.

The Phoenix improved to 3-0-0 with the win, while Truett McConnell fell to 0-1-2. Cumberland outshot the Bears 17-10 and put seven shots on frame compared to six for Truett McConnell.

Truett McConnell struck first just 3:15 into the contest when Jovica Lazarevic found the back of the net off an assist from Roman Reynolds. Cumberland answered in the 26th minute when David Barbakadze scored his fifth goal of the season. Juan Juarez, who had just checked into the game, provided the assist, leveling the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.

After the slow start in the first half, the Phoenix took control early in the second half. Wesley Mendoza struck from 30 yards out to put Cumberland ahead at the 63:09 mark, finishing off an assist from Barbakadze to make it 2-1. Mendoza then struck again with a tremendous volley in the 76th minute to extend the Cumberland advantage to 3-1. Edgar Salazar and Harold Perea were credited with assists on the goal, while it was Salazar who delivered the ball to the second post.

The Bears continued to battle and cut the deficit to one in the 86th minute when Carlos Ruiz scored but Cumberland's defense held firm over the final minutes, however, to secure the 3-2 victory. Mendoza led the Phoenix attack with two goals on four shots, including three shots on goal, while Barbakadze added a goal and an assist on five shots.

In goal, Pau Gelabert played all 90 minutes and made four saves while earning the victory. Cumberland returns to action on Saturday as the Phoenix head to Iowa to take on the defending National Champions, Grand View.
