Phoenix Rally Late to Earn 1-1 Draw at WVU Tech

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Cumberland women's soccer battled back late to earn a hard-fought 1-1 draw against WVU Tech on the road Tuesday afternoon.

The Phoenix found themselves trailing late in the second half before Uxia Varela came through with the equalizer in the 86th minute, helping Cumberland secure a point on the road.

WVU Tech took a 1-0 lead around the ten-minute mark when Shiloh Goodwin reacted first to a quick rebound to score.

Cumberland kept fighting and finally finding a breakthrough moment in the last few minutes. Varela had two shots on goal and converted one into a goal to tie the game with only four minutes left in regulation.

Cumberland's defense kept WVU Tech from scoring again, holding firm for the remainder of the game. Whilst, goalkeeper Sydney Eads had a great day making six saves.

WVU Tech out-shot Cumberland 11-4 and had a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Although WVU Tech put seven shots on goal during the game, Cumberland's defense limited them to only one.

The Phoenix's continue their unbeaten streak and will now look to return to winning ways.

The Phoenix now turn their attention to Mid-South Conference play, returning to action on the road against Freed-Hardeman on Friday at 4 p.m.
