MCKENZIE, Tenn. -- Phoenix takes the straight-set win in the Mid-South Conference opener vs. Bethel, as Cumberland defeats the Wildcats 25-23, 25-18, 25-23.

Cumberland scored 33 kills on 33 assists with a .160 hitting percentage, while getting 10 aces, five blocks, and 33 digs.

Jacey Hubbell led a balanced attack for the Phoenix, scoring eight kills on a .429 hitting percentage to go along with three blocks. Emma Chavers had her first double-double of the season, distributing 18 assists and collecting 10 digs.

Hailey Jones (seven kills), Sydney Andrews (five kills), Carola Schnidrig (five kills and four aces), and Liberty Shadix (four kills and three blocks) added to the Phoenix offense while AJ Bryant added four aces and six digs. Emma Carter was also a strong distributor, adding 10 assists.

Bethel scored 30 kills on 29 assists with a .071 hitting percentage, while having 4 blocks and 38 digs.

Kennedi Morrison led the Wildcats offense with seven kills, while Mackenzie McCammon (12 assists) and Camila Sandoval (10 assists) were the lead distributors. Sania Reaves added to Bethel's attack with six kills along with Emma Fistarol (five kills).

The Phoenix opened the match with five straight points, which included three service aces from Schnidrig, and forced an early Wildcats timeout. Bethel found their way back into the game quickly, using a 9-2 run to take the lead and force a Phoenix timeout.

This first set became a set of runs, as Cumberland used a 6-0 run to get back in the game after the Wildcats added three straight points out of the timeout.

After that last run, the set remained close the rest of the way, with both teams trading points. The Phoenix scored the final two points and won the first set 25-23 after forcing a pair of Wildcat errors.

The back-and-forth nature of the first set bled into the second set, then Bethel scored five straight points and forced a Cumberland timeout with the score at 9-13.

The Phoenix came out of the timeout strong, scoring five of the next six points to tie the game and force another deadlock.

Leaving the second Wildcat timeout, Cumberland utilized a 7-2 run to pull away and take the second set 25-18, with Schnidrig adding a pair of kills and Carter contributing with a service ace.

Bethel starts the third set strong, scoring six of the first eight points. However, the Phoenix scored four straight to tie the game back up with a service ace from Bryant.

After a lot of points traded, Cumberland found three straight points and forced a Wildcat timeout midway through the third set.

Both offenses found their form at the end of the third set, with 14 of the last 17 points from both teams being kills; however, a pair of kills from Jones sealed the Phoenix win in straight sets with a third-set score of 25-23.

Cumberland continues conference play as they head north to Williamsburg to face off against the No. 10-ranked University of the Cumberlands on Wednesday, September 23rd, with first serve set for 6:00 PM.
