Three Defensive Touchdowns Fuel Phoenix's 49-21 Win

Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. -- Cumberland used a dominant rushing attack and three defensive touchdowns to pull away from RV Pikeville for a 49-21 victory Saturday night at Nokes-Lasater Field.

The Phoenix improved to 2-1 on the season after finishing with 315 yards of total offense, including 272 yards on the ground. Cumberland averaged 6.0 yards per rushing attempt and converted 10-of-12 third-down opportunities while limiting Pikeville to 304 total yards.

Jaylen Abston led the Phoenix rushing attack with 87 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while Jordan Cason added 80 yards and a score on 10 attempts. Rashod Daniel rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, and Jake Parker contributed 36 yards on six carries.

Cumberland's defense played a major role in the victory, forcing three turnovers and turning all three into touchdowns. Tyriq Edwards returned an interception 21 yards for a score, Mason Smiley returned a fumble 39 yards for a touchdown, and Jacobi Johnson sealed the victory with a 70-yard interception return in the fourth quarter.

Cannon Johnson led the defense with nine tackles, while Mason Smiley recorded six tackles and a forced fumble in addition to his defensive touchdown. Josh Jones added six tackles, and Knox Watson finished with five tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. Cumberland totaled nine tackles for loss, three sacks and six pass breakups.

Pikeville struck first on its opening possession when Jayden Pepper broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run, giving the Bears a 7-0 lead with 8:09 remaining in the first quarter.

Cumberland answered on its next scoring drive. Cason capped the possession with a 32-yard touchdown run with 1:27 left in the opening quarter, and Jack Kantner's extra point tied the game at 7-7.

The Phoenix took the lead in the second quarter after putting together another scoring drive. Abston finished the possession with a one-yard touchdown run with 3:51 remaining in the half, giving Cumberland a 14-7 advantage heading into halftime.

Cumberland quickly added to its lead coming out of the break. On Pikeville's opening possession of the second half, Caden Henson's pass was intercepted by Edwards, who returned it 21 yards for a touchdown. Kantner's extra point pushed the Phoenix advantage to 21-7 with 14:08 remaining in the third quarter.

Pikeville responded with a touchdown of its own when Henson connected with Grant Scott for an 11-yard score, cutting the deficit to 21-14 with 9:11 to play in the third.

Cumberland answered again less than five minutes later. Jordan Parker found the end zone on an eight-yard touchdown run, extending the Phoenix lead to 28-14 with 4:52 remaining in the quarter.

The Phoenix defense then created another scoring opportunity. Henson was sacked by Lance Mathews and fumbled, with Mason Smiley recovering the ball at the Pikeville 39-yard line. Smiley returned the fumble 39 yards for a touchdown, giving Cumberland a 35-14 advantage with 2:04 left in the third quarter.

Pikeville opened the fourth quarter with another touchdown as Henson connected with Ty Perkins for a two-yard score, cutting the Cumberland lead to 35-21 with 8:12 remaining.

The Phoenix answered with another long rushing touchdown. Daniel broke free for a 27-yard score with 3:57 remaining, putting Cumberland ahead 42-21.

Cumberland's defense then closed the game with its third defensive touchdown. Henson's pass was intercepted by Johnson at the Cumberland 30-yard line, and Johnson returned it 70 yards for a touchdown with 1:06 remaining. Kantner's extra point completed the scoring at 49-21.

Cumberland finished with 19 first downs and controlled the ball for 29:45. The Phoenix converted 83 percent of its third-down opportunities and averaged 5.8 yards per offensive play.

Parker completed 5-of-9 passes for 43 yards while also rushing for 36 yards. Kaiden Hatchett led the receiving corps with two catches for 24 yards, while Kyan Maher added two receptions for 13 yards.

Henson completed 17-of-35 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns for Pikeville but threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. Pepper led the Bears on the ground with 68 yards and a touchdown on just two carries.

Cumberland returns to action next week as the Phoenix face Florida Memorial on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CT at Nokes-Lasater Field.
