LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland redshirt-sophomore defensive back Tyriq Edwards has been awarded the Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Edwards had an outstanding defensive showing as the corner recorded two solo tackles, one tackle for loss, and an interception that was returned 21 yards for a defensive touchdown. 

That pick six came on the second play of the second half when he jumped Caden Henson's pass and took it back all the way for six points. That effort gave the Phoenix a two-score cushion and was one of three defensive touchdowns on the night, the first time in modern history that the team has recorded the accolade.

This is Tyriq Edwards' first defensive player of the week award of his career and the second Phoenix to receive this award in 2026 season, after Knox Watson's win last week.

The Phoenix will return to action on Saturday with kickoff set for 1:30 PM as Cumberland welcomes Florida Memorial University to Nokes-Lasater.
