KANSAS CITY, Mo. - - Cumberland University football remains receiving votes in the third edition of the NAIA Football Coaches' Top 25 Poll, released by the national office this afternoon.

The Phoenix bounced back from a season-opening loss to No. 16 St. Thomas University (Fla.) with back-to-back dominant victories. Cumberland earned a 31-10 road win over Ave Maria (Fla.) before returning to Nokes-Lasater Field to defeat RV University of Pikeville, 49-21.

Through three games, Cumberland is averaging 28.67 points per game and 181.3 rushing yards per contest, showcasing a balanced offensive attack. Running back Jaylen Abston leads the rushing attack with 204 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Jake Parker has added 188 rushing yards and two passing touchdowns. Wide receiver Kaiden Hatchett leads the Phoenix with 110 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Defensively, the Phoenix have been disruptive, recording six sacks and forcing four fumbles through the first three games. Defensive back Knox Watson leads the way with 19 total tackles, including nine solo stops and 5.5 tackles for loss, while also recording one forced fumble and one sack. Lance Mathews has contributed 16 total tackles, six solo tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks for a loss of 16 yards.

Cumberland has outscored its last two opponents by a combined 80-21, building momentum heading into its next matchup, aided by back to back MSC Defensive Player of the Week performances from Watson and Tyriq Edwards. Last time out against Pikeville the Phoenix managed three defensive touchdowns, the first time the team has recorded more than two in modern history.

The Phoenix will return to action Saturday, welcoming Florida Memorial University to Nokes-Lasater Field. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
