Phoenix Drop Pair of Four-Set Matches in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--Cumberland women's volleyball dropped a pair of four-set matches Saturday, falling to Mount Vernon Nazarene and Cornerstone to move to 7-10 on the season.

The Phoenix opened the day with a 3-1 loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene, 26-24, 25-21, 20-25, 25-18, before falling to host Cornerstone, 25-17, 25-11, 24-26, 25-20.

Cumberland finished with 14 service aces and 12 blocks against Mount Vernon Nazarene, but the Cougars matched the Phoenix with 14 aces and held Cumberland to a .118 hitting percentage.

Carlee Rogers led the Phoenix with 11 kills, 15 assists, six digs and five blocks. Regan Eigenrauch added nine kills and seven digs, while Liberty Shadix and Hailey Jones each recorded seven kills. Shadix hit .700 and totaled five blocks, while Jones led the team with six.

Kaleigh Glass paced the back row with 12 digs and delivered six of Cumberland's 14 service aces. Emma Carter handed out a team-high 16 assists.

The Phoenix took control early in the opening set, using a six-point run to build a 7-2 advantage. Cumberland remained in front at 19-14 before Mount Vernon Nazarene pulled even at 20-20. The Phoenix reached set point at 24-23 on a kill from Jones, but the Cougars scored the final three points to steal the opener, 26-24.

Mount Vernon Nazarene built a six-point lead in the second set before Cumberland battled back within one at 12-11. The Phoenix made another push late, cutting the deficit to 19-18, but the Cougars closed the frame with six of the final nine points for a 25-21 win.

Cumberland bounced back in the third after falling behind 8-1. The Phoenix answered with six consecutive points and later used a four-point run to take a 15-13 lead. Cumberland remained in control down the stretch, scoring the final three points behind an ace from Bianca Guceanu and kills from Jacey Hubbell and Evelyn Brown to win, 25-20.

Mount Vernon Nazarene raced out to a 13-3 advantage in the fourth and held off Cumberland's comeback attempt to close the match with a 25-18 victory.

Against Cornerstone, Rogers turned in another strong all-around performance with a match-high 16 kills on a .387 hitting percentage, 18 assists, six digs and two blocks. Guceanu added nine kills and 16 digs, while Glass posted a match-high 22 digs and four aces.

Cumberland registered 45 kills but was limited to a .134 hitting percentage. Cornerstone finished with 47 kills, hit .250 and held advantages of 74-66 in digs and 8-5 in blocks.

The opening set was tied at 9-9 before Cornerstone created separation. The Golden Eagles used a six-point run to extend their lead to 20-11 and went on to take the set, 25-17.

Cornerstone carried the momentum into the second set, jumping ahead 10-2. Cumberland was unable to recover as the Golden Eagles moved ahead two sets with a 25-11 win.

The Phoenix erased a five-point deficit in the third set to extend the match. Trailing 15-10, Cumberland battled back to tie the score at 19-19. Cornerstone later reached match point at 24-20, but the Phoenix responded with six unanswered points. Glass served consecutive aces to give Cumberland a 25-24 lead before Rogers finished the comeback with a kill for the 26-24 victory.

Cumberland held an early 3-2 lead in the fourth, but Cornerstone answered with five straight points and later used a seven-point run to open an 18-9 advantage. The Phoenix pulled within four at 20-16 and again at 24-20 before the Golden Eagles recorded the final kill to take the match.

The Phoenix will have a week off before returning to the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena next Saturday to host Point.
