Atsu Nyamadi begins his third season as the Cumberland Men's and Women's Track & Field Head Coach in 2023-24 and his seventh overall after spending the previous four years as the assistant coach for the Phoenix.
Nyamadi has been extremely successful in his first two seasons winning three Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year honors and posting the highest finish in both programs at the NAIA National Championships. The women's team in 2024 brought home two third place finishes at Nationals to notch a program's best. Praise Idamadudu added three NAIA National Championships during the year while earning MSC Indoor Athlete of the Year. Doris Mensah was named MSC Outdoor Athlete of the Year after winning five events at the Conference Championships. Both the men's and women's teams combined for 28 All-American honors this season.
Nyamadi led Cumberland to their most successful season in his first year at the helm leading the men to a sixth place finish and the women to a seventh place finish at Nationals. The men's program won their first two team Mid-South Conference titles sweeping the league events. He also posted five NAIA National Champions -- Jason Bowers (Indoor Mile and Outdoor 1500m), Praise Idamadudu (Outdoor 200m and Outdoor 400m), and Goodness Iredia (Outdoor Long Jump). The program added 18 NAIA All-Americans this season.
In 2022, he helped coach two NAIA All-Americans -- Praise Idamadudu (400m) and Sibanda Dumoluhle (triple jump). The women and men each posted their highest-finish ever in the NAIA Championships at 10th and 13th, respectively.
Prior to joining the CU staff, Nyamadi spent 2017-18 at Florida A&M University as the Multis, Jumps, and Throwing coach.
A native of Accra, Ghana, Nyamadi competed at Middle Tennessee State University. While at MTSU, Nyamadi garnered All-Academic C-USA status in the 2015-2016 season. He took home first place in the heptathlon and finished in third and seventh place in the long jump and triple jump at the Conference USA Indoor Championship. During the Outdoor Championship he placed first in the decathlon, eighth in the triple jump and sixth in the javelin throw.
Nyamadi also holds the Ghana National Record for the decathlon and earned both Silver and Bronze medals at the African Games from 2014-2016.
He graduated with a degree in Liberal Science and Tourism Studies from Middle Tennessee State University.
