Brian Davies, a long-time assistant and head coach at the collegiate level, has been named the new Head Coach of the Men's program here at Cumberland University.
Most recently Davies was working with a soccer Academy PCDA in Murfreesboro, TN. His team went 16-2-1 in the Fall of 2023 and won the KY/TN UPSL Conference. Many players went on to play at the collegiate level including NCAA Division 1.
Prior to that, he was the head men's soccer coach at the University of Tennessee Southern. In 2022, the Firehawks had one of their best seasons in a decade, winning the Mid-South Conference Championship and finished the season with a record of 13-4-1. Davies was recognized with Coach of the Year honors. In two seasons with the Firehawks, his record is 23-14-1.
While at Cumberland, the Phoenix finished with a 16-3-1 record in 2018 defeating the #1 ranked Southeastern University 2-1 along the way. In 2017, Cumberland went a perfect 7-0 in the Mid-South winning the Conference Regular Season and Davies was again honored with Coach of the Year. In 2016, the team had a 13-5-2 mark in 2016, earning an at-large berth into the NAIA Championships and defeating John Brown University, 2-1, in the NAIA Championship Opening Round, to reach the final site in Orange Beach, Ala., for the fourth time in five years. He coached two Players of the Year and two Defenders of the Year during his time with the Phoenix. The Phoenix were ranked in the top 20 every season with Davies at the helm, finishing with a record of 43-16-3.
Davies career as a collegiate coach includes stops as head coach at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt., and Caldwell College in Caldwell, N.J. He was also an assistant coach at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., and served as head coach at Southeast High School in Bradenton, Fla.
Davies served as head coach at Green Mountain 2001-02, posting a 32-10 mark and earning Mayflower Conference and NSCAA/Adidas Region X Coach of the Year honors in 2001 and 2002. The Eagles were ranked No. 1 in the region and ranked in the Top 20 nationally during both seasons, making an NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2001. He coached five All-Americans and two conference players of the year while at Green Mountain.
He then moved to Caldwell College for two seasons, including an 11-8-2 record in 2004, the program’s first winning season. The Cougars tallied an 8-2 record in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in his second season as well, the best CACC mark in school history, posted the first conference tournament win for the program before losing on penalty kicks in the semifinals, and received the first-ever bid to the ECAC Tournament for Caldwell. Davies coached five All-Conference players and the Newcomer of the Year during his tenure.
He served as an assistant coach at Eckerd College for five seasons, assisting with practice, game preparation, and recruiting as well as off-season training and personal training.
Davies coached three seasons at Southeast High School, posting a 34-10-8 mark, including an 11-win improvement in his first campaign. The Seminoles won a district championship and reached the regional semifinals in 2011.
Davies received his bachelor’s in Liberal Studies from Green Mountain College and a Master's in Sport and Exercise Science from Cumberland University. He earned First Team All-Mayflower Conference honors three seasons and was twice named All-American and three-time NSCAA All-New England. He was inducted into the Green Mountain College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996 as a player and with his 1993 team in 2012 and is the program’s all-time leading scorer.
His overall coaching record is 166-70-15.
Davies resides in Murfreesboro and has two children, Kailee who is 21 and is a Junior at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. His son Jacob, 15, is a Sophomore at Central Magnet School.
