MOUNT VERNON, Ga.-- Cumberland wrestling fell via criteria Saturday night in a dual match at Brewton-Parker College, 20-19.
Brewton-Parker won for the first time in its series against the Phoenix on a decision after the teams ended the final weight class tied at 19-19. Cumberland's 19 points came off three decisions, one major decision, and a forfeit. The Barons were awarded the winning point in criteria because they had scored more points, 52-46, in the individual matches.
Carter Cox helped the Phoenix off to a good start earning a decision in the 125 pound match, 7-5. The 133 and 141 weight classes were split with the first going to Brewton-Parker via injury and the second going to Cumberland by forfeit. Cumberland lost the lead in the dual after Brewton-Parker took three straight matches in the 149, 157, and 165 pound weight classes on two decisions and one major.
The back portion of the dual saw Cumberland charge back to earn a tie, Nathan Walton getting the momentum started with a 11-9 decision victory in the 174 class which Austin Antcliffe followed with a 10-2 major decision. The Phoenix fell short in the 197 weight class, but Patrick Depiazza earned a decision victory to end the dual in the heavy weight class. Despite tying at 19-19, Cumberland lost the match by criteria.
The Phoenix will head to the Smokey Mountains this weekend for the Smokey Mountain Duals on Friday, facing Jamestown College, Reinhardt, Lyon College, and Bluefield College.
