Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Phoenix Soar Past Freed-Hardeman With 3-0 Sweep

Lebanon, Tenn.-- Cumberland women's volleyball completes their first conference sweep of the season with a 3-0 victory over Freed-Hardeman.
A fantastic team effort from CU sent them over the Lions in three quick sets and they improve to a 5-3 conference record. The Phoenix hit a .224 while holding Freed to just .010. Cumberland's win was backed by 54 digs, nine aces, and eight blocks.
Lauren Galvan had an impressive match with 11 kills and three aces. Cumberland had another strong defensive showing as Kaleigh Glass registered 11 digs with Elaine Shaneyfelt trailing closely behind with ten. Hazel Konkel took part in five of CU's eight blocks to make for a defensively solid game.
Set one was the closest battle of them all with no clear winner until the final few moments. The teams traded points as the set progressed with plenty of rallies being kept alive by scrappy defensive efforts. A kill from Galvan at the 20-19 score sent Cumberland on a massive five point run to end the set, a run during which the Phoenix counted four more kills.
The Phoenix would continue to go on unanswered runs throughout the second set, creating space with nearly flawless offensive efforts. Cumberland recorded just one attacking error all set long to hit a .455 as a team, helping them earn a massive 25-14 win.
Cumberland continued to assert their dominance as Shaneyfelt kicked off the final set with a 5-0 serving run. The early advantage kept the Lions at a distance for the remainder of the set with the Phoenix doubling their kill count by the end.
Once again, the final push saw a five point run from CU as three different Phoenix attackers helped themselves to kills. Galvan took the final swing of the game, tooling the Lions' block to secure CU's 25-12 victory.
The Phoenix will head to Fisk University next Tuesday for some non-conference action. The game will kick off at 7 PM CT.
