Women's Volleyball Goes 0-2 at Northwestern Ohio Tri-match

Lima, Ohio.-- Cumberland women's volleyball goes 0-2 in a tri-match hosted by Northwestern Ohio. The Phoenix opened the afternoon with a hard-fought 3-2 loss to Aquinas College and made a quick turnaround to face the weekend's host.

vs Aquinas
Lauren Galvan accomplished a huge career milestone in the match against Aquinas, earning her 1000th career kill while also leading all players in the game with 16. Haley Mitchell and Hazel Konkel were also important facets in Cumberland's offense, earning 11 kills apiece. Freshman Emma Chavers finished with a double-double having contributed 42 assists and 15 digs.
The Phoenix had a slow start to the afternoon as they were unable to string together more than three points, resulting in a first set loss to Aquinas. Despite going point-for-point to open, Cumberland collected multiple attacking blunders to assist Aquinas' game-altering 7-2 run.
From then on, the Phoenix faced a disadvantage while the Saints controlled the net with a .364 team attack percent. A final error on Cumberland's side concluded the set 25-19.
The Phoenix asserted their dominance in set two, doubling Aquinas' kill count to control the momentum from start to finish. Cumberland led by as many as nine as setters Emma Chavers and Monella Gomes spread the favor between three attacking options. Despite making a final push with a 6-2 run, the Saints were unable to fully recover the points and dropped the set 25-19.
The Saints collected four unanswered points to gain an early lead in the third frame 9-4. The Phoenix made a swift recovery, however, earning five straight aided by a trio of kills from Galvan to tie it 12-12. A 23-23 tie made for an exciting finish and back-to-back kills from CU would end it in their favor.
Once again, the Saints rattled off four straight to establish a lead in the all-important fourth frame. The Phoenix were haunted by attacking errors as the set unfolded, keeping them from salvaging the points. Having been held to just a -.172 hitting percentage, the Phoenix fell 25-19 to send the game into a fifth set.
The teams went back-and-forth in set five but a five point run from the Saints resulting in a 12-9 lead proved to be lethal. A mishit from CU would end the match in Aquinas' favor 15-12.

vs Northwestern Ohio
Having exerted all of their energy in the five-set thriller, Cumberland suffered a 3-0 loss to host Northwestern Ohio to close out the weekend.
Haley Mitchell led the Phoenix with eight kills, four of which were made in the second set. Kaleigh Glass held down the defensive end with 16 digs while also adding an ace.
The teams stayed within three points of each other down the stretch of set one in an intense defensive battle. With both sides making scrappy moves to keep the ball alive, the frame came down to the final few plays.
Facing an 18-18 tie, the Racers connected on a trio of swings to gain an important advantage. With a final swing from the outside, UNOH captured the frame 25-22.
Set two was another narrow race as neither side could make more than a three point spurt through the middle stages.
At a 19-19 deadlock, the Racers put up five unanswered points to set themselves up for another slim victory.
The Phoenix were plagued by errors at the net in set three, allowing the Racers to run away with an early 5-0 run. Every run that Cumberland found themselves on seemed to be interrupted by an unforced error, resulting in a 25-15 loss. The Racers concluded the game with a 6-1 run to ensure the victory.
As the regular season comes to a close, Cumberland will have just four more conference matches including a senior day celebration on October 26. Before then, the Phoenix will host Lindsey Wilson this Tuesday at 7 PM.
